Also had the red battery light this sunday. Went to the dealer who did a generator test and confirmed that it's probably going to break down soon. Asked them if it's the diode pack, but he said something about a computer chip from Hitachi that's part of the generator which brakes after a while. The chip is supposed to manage the power/current needed by the D3's electronics depending on how much is needed (heater, lights ect.). Not sure if it's true but I will receive a new generator by next Friday and hopefully covered by the extended warranty (I have to pick up 30% of the receipt, but that's still better than 100%).

I changed my alternator this morning in under 2 hours - not bad for a non mechanical person, so I would definatley advise anyone to give it a go.
Thanks again to the extremely helpful giudes on this site and of course TLO for the alternator and belt (the return will be with you this week)
