I think my alternator is stuffed, brought a new battery $325 + Freight. But the new battery is reading at 12.7v and when the car is running it is reading 12v is it my alternator or will it pick up with a good run? battery light still on in dash! Your battery is reading correctly at 12.7V with the engine off.
With the engine running at 2000rpm the voltmeter should read 14.0-14.4V depending on battery state and other electrical load on the car.
If the battery charge light is on on the dash the diodes in your alternator are faulty.
Unless you or someone else can change the diodes you need a new alternator.

Got the red iginition light on my dashboard yesterday and using the excellent guidance on various parts of this BB, took voltage readings of 12.7 engine off and 13.4 engine running - low albeit steady when heated seats and other loads applied.
Then whipped alternator out (thanks again to BB contributors for guidance) and was in local alternator specialist's workshop first thing Monday morning. He was able to see that the regulator was fine but could not do a dynamic test as the Ford diagnostics (that you might not unreasonably have thought would work) are no good on these units. All he could tell me was that the diodes probably were to blame but that he was unable to source them?
Please does anybody know how to get hold of diodes for a Disco 3 Denso alternator?
TIA

It seems the aftermarket has not yet woken up to the supposed un-sourceable diode issue and therefore the most economical way forward is service exchange. My local indie in Cheltenham is shifting more than one alternator a week as they are appearently so unreliable that 50k miles is a common life-expectancy. I managed to get 100k out of my original one in the SE that I have had from new since December 2004.
So £251.77 +VAT worse off, I am back on the road again, plus of course the £12.99 for the viscous fan spanner from Halfords ('cos I couldn't wait for the cheaper one through eBay).

Yep, normally like to keep at least 4 as otherwise they get lonely on the shelf by themselves

TLO I hope you are getting the business from "my local indie" even if I failed to call you this time. Time and the need to get back on the road quickly compelled me to source the nearest on the shelf unit I could find, even suspecting I was not likely to get the keenest price. Thanks for giving a benchmark current price point. I think there should just be time for me to reverse engineer these darn things and set up a business before mine fails again
