| Insurance premium affected by 20" RRS wheels? |
|
Guys
I recently bought a 2008 Dsco3 GS which has nice 20" RRS alloys fitted. I notified my insurance company (Direct Line) explaining while not original, they were original Land Rover alloys, but they still class the car as modified and insuance has gone from 350 to 550, plus compulsory excess from 300 to 600.
Does anyone have any argument or suggestion how to avoid this cost?
Cheers

Don't tell them, and then get dry humped if you have an accident? A dog is truly man's best friend, Don't believe me? Well lock your wife and your dog in the boot of your car and 2 hours later open it and see who's happy to see you

I think we've neatly summed up the three options available.

I pay a little extra for having 20" Stormers on mine through Tesco insurance. It differs from insurer to insurer, so you need to shop around.
Al TDV6 XS Auto - Lugano Teal with Almond Leather, 20" Stormers, Shiny Tailpipes, DVD/TV, BAS Electrickery - and obligatory D3 sticker
Old - TDV6 S - Tonga with Ebony, 20" Stormers, satnav & DVD
If you think you are too small to make a difference - you've never shared a bedroom with a mosquito

I informed my insurance company that dependant on conditions, I need to use the optimum tyre for the conditions I'm travelling in and that I therefore change over my complete wheelset [rather than just tyres].
So they know that for now I'm running with my [aftermarket - LR design] Stormer/LTZ combination and I'll be swapping between my road wheels/tyres as and when I deem necessary.
Result - No extra insurance costs, to the contrary they are totally happy and see the sense and added safety that this gives me [& them!]
I really do believe it's down to how you tell the insurance companies - without telling lies.
They are really concerned about the 'hot hatch' type changing to 'bigger rims', as to them that means 'supped up', meaning they drive faster, thereby potentially having a greater risk to accident & claim.
Hammer home that it's a four wheel drive Land Rover, not a supped up Saxo!
As another example on how you tell them - On my old D3 when I had the JE stage 2 tune, I told them that as it was a Land Rover it was to give me added torque for when I was towing [which it does, no lies there].
It also helped in the fact it was done by JE, who are recognised LR tuners for vehicles going to the extremities of this planet and its conditions.
Result - again no insurance hike there.
btw, I take date, time, who I'm taking to and note down all conversation points when I'm in discussion with them and file these away with my policy.
As Frank Carsons always says .... "it's the way you tell em"
[yes .... I am in sales for a living!] If I could think of anything intelligent, poignant or witty, I'd put it here !!!
