Mike, you need this link too: LINKY
Open the file, there's pictures and a How To. Remember this though, you need to start operations on the lower tailgate to sort the problem for the upper tailgate.
You'll also need the link in chocolademan's signature to help you carry out an effective ( and cheap ) repair to get you up and running again.
Good luck.

Mine went the weekend before Christmas
I have used the information on chocolademans sig for a repair, brilliant
Only extra advice I'd give.. When trying to get to the cable and at the same time pushing the plastic cover off (the painful bit), I used a short screwdriver to hold the plastic back and stop it trying to trap / skin my hand (I have size 10 hands though).
Other than that its half an hours work really D3 TDV6 "S", Zambezi Silver, 7 Seats, Dual Climate, Heated F&R Seats & Screen, Fog's, Auto lights & Wipers, SAT NAV, Harmon Kardon, Cruise, Tinted Windows, Side steps, Roof Rails.

My tailgate cable failed a couple of days ago. After searching through these forums I found the links listed above and went to work today. I found it easier if I used some chisels to get under the lip of the plastic trim. It took me a bit to figure out the best way to pull the carpet out from under it, but once I got started it was pretty easy. Getting to the broken cable and getting pulled was additionally very difficult, but we did get it and got the liftgate open. I went to the local hardware shop but they didn't have and electrical connector blocks that would work (as described in the .pdf, so I bought a clamp and rigged a wire loop out of bicycle brake cable that I had laying around. I also cut away part of the black covering to the housing so if I need to use pliers again, it'll be much easier getting to it. I took some pictures and placed them in my album if you want to see how I did the mods... Zambezi V8 SE
