The reason the towball is removable is so that it is not out in all weathers and corroding away. So, is it back to the dealer each trip to have it removed again for another £nn?

Roger Young in Plymouth did the electrics for 100 quid and I picked up a virtually new tow bar on e-bay for 150 quid - 250 quid seems a bit of a bargain to me compared to the tow pack - I can buy a couple more tanks of diesel now... Very Happy

Here's an update and an idea on costs:
* I was quoted £586 inclusive (tow bar, electrics, activated, VAT) a couple of weeks ago by LR dealer on my 9 month old D4.
* But I bought a brand new, unused detachable towbar on eBay for £143.
* Called LR dealer and was quoted £115 for 13-pin electrics, parts only (LR dealer on eBay has them for £110 inc. postage, non-LR supplied from eBay seems to be about £90-100).
* To just purchase 13-pin electrics, get them fitted, and software activated by LR dealer is £290 inc. VAT.

So all-in, £433 for OEM LR towbar from eBay, and electrics supplied, fitted and activated by LR dealer.

Few years ago i purchased a new passet. Later had a towbar fitted by a independent garage. Few weeks later I got handbrake warning light on the dash. Dealer layed the blame for this on the wiring for the towbar electrics and would not sort it under warrently came to 570 pounds to repair.
so bear this in mind

Sean 471 Thumbs Up
If ever I have had a problem with a car it's the towbar electrics being done wrongly, and getting all sorts of bongs when I shouldn't, and silence when I should get a warning.
Which is why the towbar lump I can get, and I'll let the LR dealer do the electrics. If they break it, they can then fix it.

Best of both worlds.
I used a independent garage last time, but like you say if i was going to do this again i would use the delaer to fit it. However not sure how they view fitting parts that they have not supplied. Just a thought really

I doubt the LR dealer would fit non-LR electrics. The £290 price is for them providing and fitting the LR electrics.
They would probably do the activation though - but the risk is that you would need the electrics to have been done properly. Wonder what they charge just for activation?
The detachable towbar isn't an issue.
