| Most significant Disco question |
|
I am faced with the most significant Disco decision. It is imposible to drive a disco and not have thought about maintanance cost, motorplans and quarentee plans... even if you have a different strategy it would help to know what you can expect.. (if you are a bit ignorant like myself chances are good that you will get an awakening.. (Mine was a steering rack plus suspention)
On the forum you will find lots of good and bad stories explaining what went wrong, what it cost etc. You can even found websites focus on horrer stories.
BUT
Where do i found data to really make an informed decision? From this data we should be able to make conclusions like...
1) 0 to 25,000 km
- 80% of disco's will have no unplanned breakdowns..
- 15% will have minor less than R5,000 issues(covered by standard plan)
- 5% .....
2) 25,000 to 50,000
3) 50,000 to 75,000
4) 75,000 to 100,000
etc..
63% of forum people are data driven with spreadsheets monitoring fuel consumption and tracking maintenance.. any thoughts? (personally I will like these stats to counter landrover jokes around the campfire)

I don't think you could ever make a convincing case to buy one based on statistical data. You need to put your head in a box and buy with your heart; if you want one, buy one.... Graham

all cars break m8 including LRs some more some less and no statistical studies would tell you what and when would break on yers
it depend on how you use it where you use it and all
get one enjoy it as much as you can and think of issues when they are actually present

I agree with some of the posts here - you buy a LR with your heart.
I am on my second LR (now an RRS) but I bought knowing they are not the most reliable cars in the world. I have already mentally resigned myself to the fact that things may go wrong and I will need to ensure I can afford to fix them (LR warranty helps alay some of these fears but not all).
If after owning it for a couple of years it turns out to be more reliable than I expected, I will be extremely happy. If not, at least there are no surprises.
Why did I do this, because I love the look of them, I love the majestic driving height and I love that special feeling you get when opening the door and sitting in the car. All things I didn't quite feel when driving the more reliable competitors.
As regards the DIsco 3, it also has the benefit of being one of the most spacious and practical 4x4 cars in production.

I agree with the other posts.
i had the same doubts but after doing about 9000km in 3months and 6500 in 2 weeks i m happy with my decision to buy one.
It is the best Vehicle i have ever owned.
Try to buy one with warranty and you will be ok.

Look on the Toyota forums - there are plenty of Landcruiser engines with short lifes.
Even the usually reliable RAV4 (and I've had two) - Toyota are replacing the early T180 engines, and I know someone who is replacing theirs again after just 7000 miles.
Probably why Toyota have agreed to source BMW engines.
You hear all the stories about taking Land Rovers if you want to go into the outback, and taking Toyotas if you want to come back. It ain't necessarily so.
If Land Rovers and Range Rovers were really so bad, would they still be in business selling £30-60k+ vehicles?

I'm on my 3rd Land Rover; Disco 2, Defender TD5 then my Disco 3. They were all bought with my heart, but with a little nod to practicality too!
The bottom line is that you need to know what you're getting yourself into. They're great vehicles, but like any complex car they have faults. I think being on this forum gives you a heads-up as to problems you may encounter, and if you understand why some symptoms occur there are often ways to tolerate or work around them.
I can't remember whose signature on here states that Land Rover makes drivers into mechanics, but I've found it true - equally (as I touch wood.. ) I've never been stuck at the side of a road with any of my land rovers... They've all had faults, but nothing that's stopped me getting where I wanted to go.

About a year ago, in the midle of the glycol/gearbox saga, front/rear diffs , tranfer boxes etc, I tried to convince members to put a [partially blanked] VIN number with their postings . This was to eventually be able to track faults with VIN numbers and so be able to see what was "due"... I think about 5 members did so... The only way now is to search for specific problems... Maybe a pensioner or someone with lots of spare time can make a listing of all faults possible, then the others only have to put "0" or the mileage at which their car suffered the problem... Let's face it we all like to report bad news, and when we have some we find a common venue to report it. Thats why most sites are ful of common problems and fixes. When we don't have problems we rarely want to spend additional time reporting that fact, we just continue enjoying the car whilst it's running great
I agree with most in the fact that when buying the Disco, it was a heart driven purchase, but I fully appreciated that it wasn't likely to be a cheap car to run in comparison to previously owned bmws and audis, mainly because of the other marques having proven build quality, but also that the disco is a bigger more agricultural vehicle. I therefore got a decent aftermarket warranty so that I can enjoy driving it rather than listening out for every squeak and clunk and hoping that it wouldn't break the bank! Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer

My FIL got leukemia 7 years ago.
He had a 20% chance of being alive 5 years after falling ill.
Guess what: he's still around.
I have been playing in two different lotteries for years now. Statistically I don't stand a chance of winning but I'm not giving up. Mainly because the street price will probably hit my street the month after I resign. But as I don't resign, it doesn't.
So gather all statistics you want, in the end you only need to be at the good end of them.
Buy the vehicle for all joys it will bring you that cannot be expressed in terms of money and take whatever you need to throw at it for granted.

One also buys for the prestige, imagine if you can being in the local and coming out with the statement "I own a Rav 4" or I own a Qrashcar" or "I own a Xtrail ". Who gives these vehicles such ridiculous names? - the name alone puts me off buying one.
Much better to be the person to say "I will" when someone comes into the pub and shouts "I own a BMW X5 and I'm stuck in the car park, is there anyone here with a Landrover who can give me a tow?" It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
