Well, as it turns out it was indeed a faulty compressor
Less than an hour at the dealer, I would have been in trouble had WD not approved the replacement at EUR 746 for the part alone!!!
Here's the new shiny one. part LR023964:
Software update was required from 6H22-14D394-AC to 5H22-14D396-AA (thanks for the link to the other thread )...
And here's how the new and old compare :
Many thanks for all the pointers and assistance and hopefully this thread will add to the long list of posts to read through if "suspension fault" or "vehicle raising slowly" or "special programmes off" (hint: keywords ) comes up on the dashboard.

Hmmm... maybe not quite sorted yet...
Car has been in my garage for the past four days after a successful few miles on Friday. Went in to start her up this morning, all good, sat for a few mins to warm her up... (it has been sub-zero for the last couple of days) The car is locked at access height as always in the garage.
Then BING! "Extended mode bla bla" and "Reset suspension height when clear of obstacle bla bla". I promptly raised to normal height, no probs, message clears Re-lower and lock at access and nothing further for the next few mins... Then SWMBO shows up tells me she needs to take the Disco today, so can't monitor anything further till this afternoon...
So given the new compressor and software update, what do people think:
- Sensor(s)?
- Switch? (I feel the "I told you so" coming my way)
- Something else?
Cheers
EDIT (two days later): well, other than that one morning occurrence, the extended height message has not appeared since and I've driven a few miles now; maybe a fluke, time will tell I guess (though I don't really believe in flukes when it comes to mechanical equipment ) ==> Guide - Inexpensive AV Modification
