Many of us get better MPG as a result of a remap. The biggest difference was for cars that pre-dated the enhancement programme back in 2006. The enhancement programme remapped all D3s (well those who took part) with a more economic map and replicated a great deal of the improvements offered by the aftermarket remaps, albeit without the boost in power and torque at the higher end of the rev range. For those with a remap at the time the 'enhancement' wiped the aftermarket remap which then had to be applied again (usually blended with the LR improvements at the time).
Clearly a remap offers the driver the opportunity to burn more fuel should he wish to drive in a more spirited manner. However, most of the time we don't drive at the limit of the car as traffic and speed limits don't change with a remap. What it does do is make the car smoother, more responsive and a less stressful overtaking ability.
So for me the biggest improvements in MPG has been due to (in order of effect):
Remap
No external accessories
Tyres
EGR blanks
Air filter (change every year)
MAP sensor
I've never carried redundant weight in the car but for those that do this could be added to the list above. Other things can work too, such as intercooler changes etc. All that effort above and without driving like Miss Daisy has seen my real world average increase from 22mpg to 28mpg. I can achieve well over 30mpg on a big run but that is usually cancelled out by the sub 20's achieved with city driving. As ever, don't use the mpg display on the dash in any calculation as its pretty pants. Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

And the results are in
370 miles (@ 56mph average)
Cruising between 65 & 70, 4up, Scorpions, 4 Big mud flaps
30.3mpg
Not quite what I was hoping for, but not too bad.
Need to get it mapped next I think. EGRs Blanked, ARB Bushes Done.

As real as I can get it.
Brimmed it yesterday and today.
£77 tho
Trip said 32.8
Has anyone any ideas how much a fair size roof box on OE roofbars would knock off it?
Cheers EGRs Blanked, ARB Bushes Done.

Well checked my tyre pressures and they were already at 34 front, 36 rear! I will need to check the air filter next?

Use premium diesel as it gets more mpg as its a higher octane
Costs more but gives more poke which is nice around town, no point on motorway runs though
My stage 2 remap reduced mpg down from 30 to 27 but the driveability is grin factor 10 so worth the extra few quid at the pumps Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer

I'm getting around 25 mpg when zero trip/mpg gauge pulling 1ton unladened trailer and up to 3.5ton ladened with EGR's now blanked and 466k on the engine
One fink I have found is to run the engine till its at full operating temp before driving off
BTW have yer had the injectors tested recently as low mpg after having the egr's blanked can be a symptom of higher fuel consumption or a soon to be FUBAR turbo, the former seems to becoming a hot topic for these older D3's along with the auto gearbox threads

Hi Character, not sure if your post was directed at me or just a general comment but my issue i believe is a very short journey to work (5 miles) the car only just gets warm by the time i get there and thats due to the traffic situation, therefore i'm pretty sure this is normal......i only got the car in December after the dealer gave it its 90k service (only on 80k) and they changed loads of stuff for me susch as headlamp, steering wheel, lower wishbones, bushes, rear drive shafts, rooftop antenna and wiring, front windscreen etc etc etc so i'm sure they would have done injectors and filters but you never know......Dealers!!!, i think i should wait until a long run with warmer temps to really test it out

ok. so I'm at the end of the thread andtyre pressures then blanking the EGRs seems to be the most cost effective MPG mod, is it an easy job?

My comp was showing about 25 but then downloaded a free app on my iPhone - Road Trip Lite. mmmmm!!
You put in the data every fill - easy to do - and it gives you the actual MPG - 20.7! and the cost per mile - 30p.. Not good when work only pay me 45p per business mile!!
That said - I live in Devon and lots of little roads and hills, hills and more hills so I am not surprised really for such a heavy lump.
I will look at the air filter and have tried some RedX to clear the injectors (Mixed reviews on this I know) and see what happens.

I have seen an increase of about 2mpg since I had mine remapped, making me get 24mpg on ave. Its a fair mix of town and country driving though. After april It will get better again when we switch back to summer grade diesel. I was getting 27mpg on summer diesel last year so will hopefully see nealy 30mpg.
