Nooby wheel nut query.

Sorry about this, but just wanted a little advice!

The missus has a D3 - it has RR Sport wheels on it and has just been in for a service a couple of weeks back.

I drove it locally yesterday and noticed an unusual noise from the back. Something I've put on my must investigate that list.

She has just gotten in from the school run today and reporting the N/S rear throwing a lot of heat out when stopped after driving and smelling hot. Thought I'd best have a look as it sounds like the pads could be binding, but am now flummoxed by the wheel nuts! I've not had cause to take them off before.

They appear to have pressed steel caps over four of the nuts, the fifth being the dreaded locking type. Is this the case? If so, how to I get these off to get to the nut proper? I've tried a pair of grips on them with no success. My Audi has a little tool that pulls the caps off (had a puncture on that yesterday - having quite a bad spell of running gear issues!).

Again, sorry for the silly question, but hope you can point me in the right direction!

Thanks,

those pressed steel caps should be 22mm socket sized....... just put the socket on with a breaker bar & undo......

As for the locking wheel nuts....... I'd get them binned & replaced for std nuts. Very unlikely that someone will be able to lift a D3 for the wheels.......

Hi and welcome.

The pressed on (stainless) steel caps are part of the nut, a 22mm socket should fit over them, unless of course you have the dreaded "Swollen Nuts" syndrome, then its a case of bash a socket on, remove the nuts and replace them with new ones.

Might be as well to replace the locking ones with regular nuts too, before the dodgy "key" breaks.

Edit; must type faster. Razz

Thanks guys - just worried me a little as some of these "caps" seem to be pretty loose (will rotate 10 degress each way) whereas the rest seem solid. Half and half I would say.

I shall go and see if I can find a 22mm socket and see what happens!

when the nuts get swole...

the bling nut covers appear loose
..you may finf threads on here about swole wheel nuts...
it would appear the LR wheel nuyts as fitted to D3's at least have the propensity to "swell"
then the whel nut spanner supplied doesnt fit (easily)

all those of the offside of my car had to be swapped out...the nearside for some strange reason didnt

I havent had any issues with the locking (non bling cover ) nuts
 ....have Disco3 HSE TD6 Auto...winter mobile
....also Jag XK......the economy 5.0 litre one...I'm REALLY smitten with this
....& have a Freelander 2 SE Auto...realistic runabout....
