Right, started the planning based on your good advice, all much appreciated. The 'whiskey hotel' look great, however out of my price range, the other hotel mentioned unfortunately is closed for the winter, but did look good many thanks. The destinations are looking something like this: (if I have uploaded correctly!), please note I have not yet planned the route, these are just listed in the order people have mentioned them!

Any more thoughts....

Looking good....just a suggestion...why don't you go all the way up the Great Glen (the long line of lochs from Ft William to Inverness) then cut across to Applecross...extend the tour a bit...and include some extra spectacular scenery...
ps....Americans wearing tartan should be thin on the ground so the road up Loch Ness should be reasonably quiet Whistle

If you are looking to go out on a boat then try Duncan at fairsain tours from Croabh Haven (01852 500664/07880714165 [email protected]) or slightly north there is Sealife Adventures, you go over the "bridge over the Atlantic", there are a few others as well. Contact before going for availability

Hi, thanks for the details on the boat trip but I don't think I will have time.

The Route !

Here we go, and I feel I may be about to get shot down in flames, but I welcome your input, some of you know the area far better than me. I have started the route planning, and its as follows (bear in mind I go next week!). I have decided not to go too far north, if I had a pass for 2 weeks I could have maybe done that too but that would be pushing it ! I will also do Skye before Mull.

Day 1
Going up to Glasgow on Monday evening and staying with a mate (our for curry and a couple of beers!) Approx 110 miles

Day 2
A82 up the side of Loch Lomond and Loch Linhe to Fort William, take in the view of Ben Nevis (Approx 95 miles)
A830 to Mallaig (Follows the West Highland Railway?) (approx 42 miles)
Ferry over to Isle of Skye
(Ideas Welcome for overight stay on Skye)

Day 3
Spend some time on Skye in the morning then
Drive over bridge on A87 from Broadford to Auchtertyre
Take A890 up / A896 over towards applecross, and take the Southern High Route to get there (approx 66 miles)
Come back via the A890 & A87, following the A82 down the east side of Loch Lochy to Fort William, stay the night there (again I welcome suggestions)

Day 4
Down the A830 and A861/A884 to Lochaline, car ferry over to Isle of Mull (Fishnish) (approx 50 miles)
Drive up to Tobermory
Stay the night (suggestions welcome)

Day 5
Ferry back over from Craignure to Oban
Take A85 accross to Crainlarich and down the A82 back to Glasgow/Carlisle

Be aware with your travel times: the road beside Loch Lomond is an A road but you won't do anywhere near 60! (Even 30 can be a struggle at times...)

Same allies to lots of other "A" roads Thumbs Up

Thanks for that advice, yes I can imagine its much like the lake district where I spend a lot of my time, so 60 miles can easily take 2 hours...
