I will soon need a car with a greater towing capacity than that of my RAV which is a pity as the RAV has been excellent. I have been put off the D3 by the horror stories about things going wrong frequently and expensively and I've driven a D4 which I liked. I don't want to spend more than £25k at a franchised dealer and at the moment I can't find anything but I'm prepared to wait. Now I know that noone can know for sure but when might the price of a 2009 GS drop to around £25k ? Six months, a year? If a franchised dealer is advertising one for £28000 and there is no trade in, I can't imagine that an offer of £27750 would be turned down but equally I don't think that an offer of £24k is going to succeed. I know it comes down to length of time in stock, month end etc but what might they sell for? In other words without a trade in what % off should I look for?
Thanks for your thoughts.

I would'nt go so far as to say the D3 is pants against the d4 given that the d3 ran from 2004 - MY 2009 and the D4 has only been around at lot less. Issues are being reported on the d4 these days and in time I'm sure they will become more readily posted on forums as they too get a bit old.
I'm sure "horror stories" will become common place and yes they are expensive to repair whether a D3 OR D4 if you use the dealer network or those not use to the machine.
At least with the D3 there's pletty of us who have "been there done it" to take advise from.
Rather than slag off the D3 on a D3 forum, might I politely suggest you revist a Toyota RAV4

I agree, get a D3 which has full service history and if worried about bills get some warranty. for that sort of money you could get a low mileage decent car and relatively cheap motoring. James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

I'm sorry if I've upset you -it was not the intension -I've been through the D3 forums and there are some horror stories . The RAV can't tow over 1.5 tons.
Apologies again.

Someone posted on here last night they were to look at a D4 with 80k miles on at £26 something
You'd be better looking at the D3 Gareth is selling , slightly higher miles but massive increase in spec
And you'd pocket £8k D4 HSE - Aintree Green

Stornaway D4. Gone, Didn't like it at all

Hi Exraver ,
Welcome to the forum. I think that you might be waiting a while for a D4 to drop to £25k tbh. As other have said on here though, the D3 is a great car. Yes, it has its' foibles like any car with numerous complex systems but if you go for one with a fsh but more importantly, one that has been well looked after i think you'll find few problems. I a fortunate to have a D3 and a D4 and i think that they are great cars! My D3 is a G4 vehicle and was new in May'08. I paid around £21k for it but you have to account for the G4 effect on the price with that. 66000 miles and no real problems other than the EPB to report and to be fair, I do fill it up with mud and silt on a regular basis! Glad you're looking to trade up. keeping an eye on the For Sale and Wanted section on here would be a good move IMHO. Anyway, good luck with your search and pleaase do let us know how you get on?

me personally I would go for a 2.7 D4, rather than the 2 turbo'd 3.0 litre which from experience using one for towing 3500kg all day long, does'nt half drink the fuel
at least with the 2.7 version you know all the issues have been addressed on what by then would be and is a very solid engine....oh yea and of course us lot know alot about the 2.7!!
in total you'll get the looks of a d4 with decent fuel economy and perhaps cheaper repair costs etc.

Is there a big difference between 2.7 and 3 litre towing MPG???? I thought the 3.0 would be better as more torque and less strain for the engine and lighter than a D3 by 100 kg or so? But you have more experience than everyone at towing so I bet your right 2023 Ineos Grenadier 3.0 Diesel Commercial

I had a choice of a D4 and one of the last D3s.... I felt the extra 5k difference wasn't worth it for the first of the facelifts.
To me the D4 really comes in to its own with the 3.0 SDV6 and 8 speed auto.
I also felt that a better specced D3 was a more usable beast... To me the D3 is more "tonka", more chunky and therefore I don't feel so bad using it for the practical things I bought it for.. Dogs, camping, tip runs, kids, etc.,
The D4 is lovely but is almost so luxury car like that it feels a shame to ruin it.
Maybe that's just me though
P.s get a D3 with the bright work inside around vents and cup holders, light coloured interior and piano black gloss kit and despite being chunky it still does luxury quite nicely too

That's why I always go GS. Cloth, not as many electrical toys functional rubber mats, but get all the performance and the mechanical gizmos (Terrain Response, 8spd Auto) and all the road presence. But put a few options on like full size spare and tow bar and the wood inserts. I am not saying there's anything wrong with higher spec's they are gorgeous inside 8) but for my use, I like my cloth seats and rubber mats 2023 Ineos Grenadier 3.0 Diesel Commercial

Following the consensus, I tried a D3 today at an Independent Specialist. It would suit me and I asked about the reliability issues and he said that they do exist when they haven't been properly serviced but if you get one with a FSH, it should be ok. So I'll move to a D3 thread. Thanks for your advice,. Now to work out the different specs ...

Seriously, I would look at he one Gareth on here is selling ( or was yesterday). High spec and I think got reduced to £17k. As Character said, a LOT of D3 for your money and the belts (big service) have just been done.
Do a search on Author for Gareth and its a few threads down.
Good luck

as Glosboy says you'll get a lot of D3 for your money.
nothing wrong whatsoever with the D3 - after all, it won loads of awards. and its a proper 4x4
the D4 is more refined , but then my 06 D3 was as refined as an 06 E Class Merc...
everything gets better over time Duncan
