Should you own a D3 after 3-yr warranty expires??--DISCUSS!
A couple of fellow D3 owners I know say that, without exception, their Landies are superb. But with so many problems, from minor to major, they would not run the vehicle as personal car after it's three years old and warranty expires because of potentially huge costs.
They would either a) sell the D3 and replace at 3 years or b) lease.
As the DISCO3 site has been full of both praise and brickbats for the car, what do others think? Smart to sell after 3 years? Would Landrover be accommodating to owners of D3's more than 3 years old for repairs on well-known faults (i.e. compressors) under "goodwill?" Would they continue to do software fixes free of charge, etc etc?
Or have LR got it right with '06 models onwards and will incidence of faults fall?
Does LR offer an extended warranty available after the normal 3-year cover expires?
Any views welcome as certainly would like to run my own 18-month-old D3 indefinitely into the future.

I will take out an additional years warranty for year 4 and then get rid of it.
I would not take the chance of getting very big repair bills as it is not the sort of car that the DIY mechanic can work on easly for anything major.
Even diagnosing faults can be a major headache for the dealers never mind the home mechanic, and then theres the computer software interface which you need to access.
The good news is you should then be able to pick up a 2nd hand one for parts very cheap!
I'm planning on keeping mine for many years.
Can't afford to replace every 3 years really, even if the residuals stay high.
The cunning plan is to run for a good 7 or 8 years really, hoping that there aren't too many big bills.
I know there is a market in conversion kits for the early 1990s air sprung Range Rovers - to convert from air to coils due to compressor reliability problems. I wonder whether the same kind of thing will be popular in 5 or 6 years from now?
I'm hoping the 2nd hand market doesn't get too jittery worrying about reliability issues. So far it's fairly buoyant (as seen by Martin's recent challenge thread to find the cheapest 2nd hand on the market- if I recall the cheapest was priced at £21,000 for a launch date 5 seater - ie only £4k off what you can pick up a brand new one for. That's a healthy residual so far)Discovery 3 tdv6 7 seat Buckingham Blue

I personally would be very wary about running mine beyond 3 years (or 4 with a 1 year extension) - my reasons are pretty much covered by previous posts (potential for huge bills, too hard to fix etc)
I suspect if I get bitten by the off-road bug I can see me swapping for an old Defender and a new 'normal' car after this period - we'll see - a lot will come down to my financial situation (impact of children at university ) at the end of year 3 Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

For me it's quite straightforward - after 'owning' this one for 2 years 9 months, my dealer will call me up and plead with me to take a new one off him again for a fancy discount and that doesn't cost me roughly any more or less than the old motor.
So am I gonna keep mine beyond 3 years and forgo such an offer? -HHHmmmmm...... let me think this one out 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

9/10 I'll sell it to the garage when ordering a new defender.
If the price is right, and the DIII is still in a state to sell...
Love the luxury of it, but it isn't a Defender 110 or 130...
I want to be in control on the road, not the car...
Adding to this, the fact that in 1 year I needed more warranty service as in 3 years I drove the Defender is an other reason not to keep the DIII beyond warranty time...
And be asured, the DIII ain't seen nothing yet compaired to the Def110...
Never the less, I am proud to drive the DIII, but it cant' give me what the defender gave me... (except for the normal conversation instead of shouting when driving over 100km/hr )In a time of chimpanzees, I was a penguin.

Mine is 18 months old, and has 18 months of the 3 year PCP to go. After I have paid the 16k final payment, I will probably part ex for a new one. All depends on finances at the time, and if the current one stays as reliable as its been, I will have no problem running it for longer.

I love defenders Penguin - I'd have one as well as a D3 - but err indoors has threatened certain parts of my anatomy with a very sharp knife if I buy a second Landy21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

My wife drives a def 90, and even she takes the Def more than the DIII

I've never kept a car for three years in my life. My longest was nearly two years, so the chances are nil....
I personally think the D3 has an inbuilt timer, that will cause it to implode once the warranty period expires. How else will they re-coup the amount of cash they have to throw at claims.
If I was to keep it past 3 years which i won't, I'd be cacking ma pants over a big bill, which will happen.
then on a purely snobby note..."I don't do MOT's!!!"
I'm keeping mine past that, as posted elesewhere there's only 2 things I'll change it for ...The End

Yep keeping mine passed its three year birthday (to much kit to swap) . Might invest in a FFRR for the day to day car waiting to see what the TDV8 is like first and if there are any special deals on the TD6 after the V8 is launched

So, you are all saying that a 60K euro premium vehicle is not built to last more than 3 years?
Am I about to take delivery of such a thing? Did I just make the worst purchase of my life? I precisely purchased, for that price, what I thought would be a solid long-lasting car....
Maybe I should keep it garaged for a couple of years and cross my fingers I can get something decent with whatever resale value I am able to obtain....
It can´t be.... My other cars (Ford, BMW) definitely went well beyond the 3-year mark in outstanding conditions.
Somebody cheer me up! JL Martin
