Topping up battery using NOCO Genius1UK

Is it advisable to remove battery terminals before clipping on the battery charger to top up, or I assume these newer ‘smart’ charges you can clip onto the battery terminals as is to top up?

Any advice appreciated thanks!

My understanding is that you connect charger positive to battery terminal positive, and charger negative to an earth point in the engine bay. This allows the battery monitoring system to see and log the charge.
Edit: And no need to remove the battery terminals. MY12 D4 HSE Ipanema Sand

Shouldn't matter where you connect the negative (battery terminal or engine earth) it'll still charge the battery. Richard

Agreed.
But, on a D4 at least, there is a Battery Monitoring System that sits between the negative terminal and earth and this manages the charging of the battery from the alternator in order to leave space in the battery for charging on the over-run ie. regenerative charging. This BMS needs to know about any top-up from a battery charger. MY12 D4 HSE Ipanema Sand

Thank you, assuming there shouldnt be too much of an issue with the BMS as it would be a top up of the battery to improve winter cold starting

If you need to do that then the battery needs replacing .
