Torque converter, gearbox or engine issue??
Hi all.
Sorry me again with another problem or multiple issues.
So after the vehicle warms up if I put my accelerate at around 30mph I get a bad case of the judders, think 3rd and 4th gear around 1800 - 2300 revs so gentle acceleration.
If I plant my foot to get kick down I can sometimes get a hesitation then it takes off like a rocket with a puff of black smoke.
When cruising along at 30 / 40 sometimes the revs fluctuate by around 500 rpm and it sounds like a short sharp ssshing sound while the revs drop then goes when revs return.
I have tried to video it but you can’t hear the noise.
It’s a 2006 auto with 250,000 miles on it, huge amount of service history including a transfer box but can’t find anything about gearbox or torque converter. It has a huge silicon hose on the left side of the engine that I think is from the inter cooler ( I am no mechanic!!!) and this seems in good shape apart from a small patch where it sits against the chassis.
I had to have the low pressure pump replaced ( genuine unit fitted) and also serviced with fuel filter changed. Apart from the black smoke the juddering / rev drop was present Prior to the pump replacement. I had a flush done which got rid off the Rev fluctuations when cruising at 70mph and a tube of dr tranny added but this didn’t help the lower end. I am aware I need the torque converter replacing but my questions are:
Could the hesitation, funny noise and black smoke be due to the torque converter or is this another problem?
How do you know if the gearbox needs replacing as well as the torque converter?
I appreciate your thoughts, I am struggling for a local specialist who I trust to have a look and advise as well as being furloughed with no hint of a return date pennies are tight.
Thanks all
Baz

Thank you.
The turbos were replaced 4K miles ago so fingers crossed it’s nothing major.

Maybe EGRs?
Worth reading up on all the ways they can cause issues depending on if they stick open or closed. Mine failed recently, when it was cold the car had almost zero power, then it would be fine, then slow like it was almost dead. Main reason I say this is it did puff smoke.
Sadly EGRs are not cheap, but its definitely an expected thing to go on a Disco, even one thats well maintained. Mine only have 60k miles but id guess its had a lot of short trips which wont help for EGR issues.Disco 3: Lotus Elise S1: Ferguson T20: Audi A2

turbo's? there is supposed to be only one.. on a MY 06 or MY 07 if you paid for two....... talk to them.. 8)
the actuator arm can be stuck, dirty, etc... then your turbo adaption for lower revs could be faulty
fault code's?Best regards

Thanks guys.
The egr were blanked by previous keepers but not sure if there is anything that can still have any impact - I have read about a sensor (MAP?) that may be dirty so on my list.
Turbos - a typo there as only 1 on the paperwork so that’s good.
I did read about actuator so more research to do on that to see if I can check that.
In terms of fault codes I only seem to get the egr circuit due to them being blanked and also a ventilation one that I can’t seem to clear.
I will re-read them again tomorrow incase anything else has appeared.

I would definetly clean your map sensor as its so easy to get too and i would also make sure your butterfly valve has been removed if you have blanked egr valves

Be carefull when cleaning the map sensor..... they are fragile, so never poke in the hole! You wouldn’t be the first one to Destroy one and they are are quite expensive..Best regards

I would start with the EGR's and see what the problem is with them - might not have closed or 'gunked up' (technical term), then look for a connector on the LIN bus.

i see no date's, could be old(er) data...
since we see also auxillary data, which can be odd with this season
reset, run/drive it and read again..
and please tell us what you did allready.. for good help..
i expect the EGR faults pop up again.. i agree with globetrotter448 the seem to have no signal...Best regards

Cleared the faults and had a drive again today and then read the faults.
The EGR are blanked, done before I got the car, and was told the fault would show due to the blanking.
Thanks a lot guys appreciate your thoughts.

If they have been blanked, then the ccf file needs amending but I would still look and make sure butterflys are closed. The gear position may just be the linkage on the side of the box may need cleaning and a dose of WD40
