It boggles my mind that people tow with these things; there is literally zero redundancy. The fact there was a recall should be enough to put anyone off.

There is a redundancy in a way the brake away cable shouldnt be attached to the towbar. The brakes on a caravan will stop it prety quickly if there in servicable condition. But most of the brake away cables i see a just looped around the towbar.
I was vary lucky to see tests carried out on brake away cables at the thatcham test site and have seen them stop a four wheel trailer loaded to 3.5t in just over the distance a car would take to stop.

When I did my trailer test, the instructor told me hooking around the bar was fine. I couldn't believe what I hearing. I explained why it was an issue and he didn't really agree. Very worrying..

At least it followed instructions and when left Laughing
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Plug-in towbars are common on many cars. It is important to regularly check condition and secure fitting. D3/D4 type works well, neglect or ignorance\stupidity are a problem. Trailer tyres may be a more common serious issue.
