Stolen from another thread.

A quote from VOSA - "using large commercial type trailers or trailers with high nose weights with the detachable type towbar can cause premature wear on the detachable towbar".
At the assistance of VOSA Land Rover have agreed to write to all owners of vehicles equipped with detachable towbars, to inform them of the need to use the right towbar for the type of trailer or towed implement they are using. (November 2013). Have they contacted you yet?
This is not a recall by VOSA, just an instruction to LR to inform customers that they cannot use the towbar that they have purchased from them to tow large trailers. The customer must now buy another one for that job! Why the hell would anyone buy a Discovery to tow a small trailer?
Let me be clear, I think that the Discovery 3 is a great tow car & Land Rover make world beating cars now but their customer relations dept are a disgrace in the way that they have tried to hide this potentially lethal problem from it's customers.

Is this where people that have bought the detachable one (and it’s showing signs of wear) have got a free replacement fixed tow bar courtesy of LR?

Mine went in a while back I explained I used it for the 3.5t livestock trailer as well as the TA tintent and they told me I would need a fixed one, it was fitted FOC even though it passed the wear test, they even valeted the old girl before I got it back.

The "occasional use" is its not meant to left in nor used for heavy duty or commercial use, so unlikely you would have an issue with the insurance if it came out will towing a caravan, That said as far as I am aware every incidence of a tow bar falling that has been investigated probably was found to be as a result of the the pin not being correctly engaged and not wear.

Not sure where this is actually from, but this is not the case, the wear can happen no matter what weight trailer is towed and is caused by leaving the tow-bar in and a combination of damp and rust which then turns into a grinding paste when towing all the slight movements causing wear on the socket. Mine was regularly used for 3.5t livestock trailer with a very heavy nose weight and no wear, because I always removed it. I know of people who towed 1500kg caravans and left them in and they did have wear.
