Towing a horse box with 2 ponies

Hi, I am a newbie, and about to take to leap to a D3, HSE 2.7. Will it be OK at towing 2 tons of pony? I want it to make a reasonable pace up an incline. Currently the VW T5 is doing 45 mpg flat out up our bypass, and the trip computer says 7 mpg! Many thanks and apologies if this is the classic newbie Q!

Welcome.
A D3 will tow 2 tonnes with ease. It's rated to tow up to 3.5 tonnes with a braked trailer.

Plenty of threads on here about towing and tow bars. Thumbs Up

You’ll barely notice that you’re towing a 2 ton trailer!

It will be fine.

I regularly towed my boat to devon with my D3, and it doubled as a huge camping trailer for the trip there and back, full of diving gear, smaller boats and engines, and our collapsable bungalow that pretended to be a tent.

All up it was @3Tns, and although I knew it was there the D3 never struggled, even up the long hill at Honiton where I'd regularly be in the second lane passing a stream of Lorries and Cars with caravans in the crawler lane.

I've not had a chance to do the journey in my D4 with the boat on the back yet, but judging from the short tows I've done so far it will do even better.

The only thing I will say, is that obviously any amount of weight on the back is going to show up any shortcomings that are starting to appear with the torque converter or suspension arm bushes.

We've started towing a stock trailer long distances, picking up and dropping off goats and the D3 has performed admirably.
Recently whilst towing a larger trailer carrying a new acquistion of a small tractor, the amber brake light came on.
This didnt in anyway affect the braking performance, as it was the brake indicator wear light.
What I did do though, was upgrade to the V8 discs when I changed them out.
I've driven the D3 for more than 10.000kms towing my boat through Southern Africa on standard brakes (the boat is actually not that heavy, compared to horse boxes and stock trailers) and not had a problem but having had the new upgrade on now for a few days, I agree with other Forum members in thinking that this is a good modification for a D3, especially if towing regularly.

I often towed a 2 ton trailer with my D3 , no issues at all , even when once having to swerve to avoid a motorcyclist on my side of the road and agree, after a while you forget its there.

never had any issues at all, we have the largest ifor williams box (suitable for two 17 hand horses) and it is very stable.

as mentioned you do not know it is on there. I would add my Ssangyong Rexton is equally as good from a towing perspective, i would even go as far to say it beats the D3.

That's the danger!

Although far less likely when towing horses/ponies.

Ive modified my livestock ifor to carry 3 ponies/horses which it does with ease,

i regularly tow upto and over 3 tonne of livestock to auctions, you are aware its there but they do tow extremely well.

you will be fine.
