Towing with a TDV6

We have just ordered a twin axle caravan (Swift Conqueror 645), and intend to tour Italy next summer. The last time I towed with an automatic car was some ten years ago when we had to fit a gearbox oil cooler in order that the car could cope with towing in hot weather. I see from the handbook that the D3 automatic gearbox oil is filled for life. I assume that the D3 is capable of towing a 1750 Kg caravan without the need for additional gearbox oil cooling. Does anybody know any different?

From this summers experiance we I have made about 5k KM across Europe with a 1600kg Fendt on the back, with the D3 auto. No problems only easy motoring and fantastic hill starts.

The D3 can comfortably tow a 3500kg braked trailor on-road. Always follow recommendations for nose and axle weights specified in the handbook Wink

Towing



These motors can really tow, up hill down dale and usually in excess of 80mph !!! lol
Mine will quite happily tow all day every day, in fact generally does !
This trailer is about 2 ton, its a medical centre in side and carries a 400cc 4x4 quad, big easy up and a couple of gennies, its way heavier than your average modern caravan.[/img]

22/25 mpg on decent A roads and motorways

18/19 mpg stopa nd start

i havent seen a spitfire towing before though !!

Mr Bling, having owned one of the first Spitfire Mk IV's in March 1971, I don't think you will be blasting round Europe (unless it has been tuned).
I haven't towed with the D3 yet so I'm waiting to see what mpg we will get.

as folks have said your D3 will tow it like it wasn't on the back of the motor.

However. you will hvae a problem in Italy getting onto sites with that size van. plan your route and choose the sites then phone them to make sure your van will get in ok This is a must.

We have eventually got that fed up touring abroad with big vans that we sold ours this summer and bought a Geist.

I'd give up the abroad bit before selling the bigger van. It will mean you won't have to put up with all those Johnny Foreigner types too Wink

Yes, fully rebuilt (nut & bolt restoration), and tuned nicely (ported & polished head, tubular manifold, lightened vernier flywheel, fast road cam, double valve springs, duplex timing, sports exhaust, pancake filters replaced with stack-subs, electronic ignition and fuel pump, converted to alternator, etc, etc. Also, it's the small crank 1300 engine, which was always a lot revvier than the later Mk4 and 1500 engines. I'll get it set up on a rolling road once the engine is run-in. Should be good for about 15bhp increase, which doesn't sound like much until you consider that it's around 20% more than original factory spec, and the car weighs very little compared to even a modest small modern hatchback.

I had one of these back in the late 70's. A signal red Mk111 (VKC 190H) It was brilliant but suffered from the inevitable tin worm so I did the same as you, a complete nut and bolt restoration. With similar engine mods my spitfire gave just over 100 bhp at the wheels, on a rolling road. I fitted bigger carbs (11/2" SU's rather than 11/4") as the engine needs to breathe. A lovely little car and much nicer than the MGB I replaced it with. Wish I'd kept it! It ate clutches though due to the extra power!

I've also dragged a 1500kg Fendt across Holland and Germany this summer with my 2.7 Auto. I was more than impressed with the Auto Box. Down shifts on autobahn gradiants were smooth and seamless. I would never go back to a manual box!
