Yes you are right. The automatic upgrade to manual transmission only applies to categories C, CE, D, DE and not category B+E. This means if you pass your B+E test in an auto you will be restricted to Auto B+E only, even if you have manual cat B entitlement. Take your B+E in a manual and you can drive both.

Our Amy practiced in our D3 auto and 6x4 single axle trailer. Then passed using a 110 and box twin axle trailer. She said it was easy reversing the twin axle after our little trailer. So you may be better that way. Thumbs Up good luck.

I've managed to get a 6x4 for a week. I'll give that a whirl first.

Anyone got a detachable tow bar for sale? Rolling with laughter

The bigger the trailer the easier it is to back up, and twin or Tripple axles are easier than single. If you want to lead to reverse quickly then start with a tractor and flatbed trailer, you can clearly see what’s going on and having a very tight steering lock makes it easier to recover when you cock it up lol.

I use low ratio on my D2 not used D3 yet slows things down been advised to use snow mode told gives smooth throttle response. Not sure if you can do this on test?

Did my B+E last year as I didn't want to get in the situation of being pulled over with something slightly too heavy and getting a stack of points.

As has been said larger trailers are easier to reverse but I have a 6x4 which I was good at reversing so the reverse exercise was very manageable. I recommend using a small one to learn as that makes the test easier for the reversing.

I understand that it is handy to use a company who provides everything although I felt that they were taking the biscuit a little when charging £250 to borrow a jeep and trailer for 2 hours. I was able to borrow a trailer and rent a water cube (£10 for a day) as the rules around trailer height, width, length and loading are very strict.

I recommend youtube videos of UK instructors doing hitch/unhitch, reversing etc to show you what the examiner wants to see.

I also agree that doing it in an auto only gives you an auto license but I have never seen an auto only B+E and have known people to do the test in an automatic.

As a final point when you pass and send your license away to be updated, have a photocopy/proof of your current entitlements encase theres any errors as the onus is on you to prove you had a motorcycle license for instance if they accidentally remove it for you.
