I have an electric winch on my Car transporter trailer that i usually run off a separate battery, the winch is a Superwinch UT3000 and is usually used on the front of jeeps as a utility winch.
I'm looking to wire this up so that i can run it from the trailer/caravan sockets on the rear bumper instead of having to run a cable straight from the D3's battery
has anyone done something similar?

You can't do this, the max current you can draw from the tow socket is 15 Amps.
You know i have searched high and low for information on the current draw of this winch and couldn't find it, even the manual i got with it doesn't tell you
So i guess my best bet is to run a power cable from the battery to the winch and make some sort of hidden connector that i can use when required?

I have run cables from the battery to the towbar and put an aderson plug on the end, I then just plug it in when i need to use the winch.

+1 an Anderson Connector of suitable size is perfect for this application. I'd fit it tucked behind the tow electrics flap.D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

Yep, did the same on my D4 for my tipper trailer. Now fitted in the rear of the D5
I have run cables from the battery to the towbar and put an aderson plug on the end, I then just plug it in when i need to use the winch.
Do you know what size anderson connector you used? They seem to jump from 50A upto 175A
Edit - found 120A ones!

I always use the grey 175amp connectors, and ran my positive cable (35mm) on top of the chassis, which was possible because the body had been lifted off at the time.
I ran the negative cable to a bolt on the chassis at the rear.
My plug is mounted to the tow bar bracket and so I used an Andersen rubber gaiter round the leads secured with a cable tie on each, and a plug on the end, you never know when you might park in a puddle.

Thanks for the info, i dont think the cable that came with the winch is even half the diameter of 35mm2 cabling but will check it all when i get home from offshore

The cable on my winch isn't either, but you will get a 'power' drop over the 5m or so distance, and the last thing you want is a warm cable going on, but I agree possibly a 25mm would do.

Following this with interest as want to do the same for the winch on my trailer, I assume those that have done it are feeding the Anderson socket from the starting battery and haven’t fitted a second battery.

I have connected to the main battery but also have an aux battery that feeds in when the engine is running

Thanks on my D3 I may well eventually adding an aux battery in time as it is also going to be used for camping, but I also have a D4 that is used for towing the trailer from time to time so would be handy to have one but don’t want to go to the hassle of an Aux battery on that.

If it's of any help I fitted a locked battery box to the trailer to power the winch. A solar panel on the lid keeps it topped up and always ready to go.
This arrangement also allows for easy work light set up via cigarette lighter sockets or for other uses. I made the box out of aluminium checker plate and its big enough to hold a 120 Ah battery, winch remote control, the female trailer lights socket and removable male to male suzie cable. This keeps both bone dry and away from the weather. A top quality marine battery isolator switch completes the setup for reliability.
It always has it's own power and is therefore independent of any tow vehicle. The box is located on the "A" frame just in front of the bed, and can be installed in a few hours if you don't have to make the box.yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ
