Tranny cooler lines... any tips for replacement? |
|
My NA LR3 V8 transmission cooler lines are badly rusted and wet with tranny fluid along half their length. I'm looking for a good write up to replace them. Do I need to drain the transmission? etc... It appears I can pull them rearward from below, but might have to move the driveshaft. Any input is welcome!

I don't think drain is required.
you will probably loose half a litre though.
have a container ready to catch
there are one of 2 guides on here, so do a search.
think i posted in one of them
there is a fun bolt by the air con compressor. Requires a universal joint to undo

as Pete said you will loose a bit - at the very least whatever is in the pipes and maybe the cooler (not sure if inlet/outlet is at the bottom) so you need to make sure the plug is removable and that you know how to put more fluid in and that you have some new as stuff you catch will be contaminated.
Of course you could use the opportunity to do a partial fluid change if desired? Pete

this does NOT use red fluid.
fluid needs to be for 6HP26
refill though the level check hole (not after driving)
pain on the V8 due to exhaust
loosen level plug but don't remove!!!!
start engine
now it is safe to remove the plug
refill until there is a small trickel of fluid.
refit plug tight
turn engine off
or just put back in a similar amount that was drained
DO NOT HAVE THE PLUG OUT WHILE THE ENGINE IS OFF, ELSE YOU WILL LOOSE A LOT OF FLUID

Thanks everyone! That's just the info I needed! I did the metal pan swap to fix a leaky Mech Sleeve, in the process I found the cooler lines in poor shape and leaking too. I have 1/2 litre of LR fluid left over from the pan swap, but I'll order another just in case. I'll be ordering parts today. I assume the o-rings will come with the pipes.
The bottom pipe flows from the tranny, top pipe is the return. I wonder if it's better to first disconnect at the tranny or at the radiator...?

As said. It's a good idea to disconnect the top rad pipe
And leave for an hour. +
At least some of the fluid will drain back even if only 1 pipe.

I have the old cooler lines disconnected and drained. Looks like I may have to remove the front driveshaft to pull them out...I'd rather not go thru all that. Does anyone know of another method? Has anyone pulled them from the front or from above?

Success! Thanks for the tips everyone. I managed without disconnecting the driveshaft. Putting the rest back together this weekend and working on a write up. One of the pipes had a pinhole (blew air thru it). I'll mention your contributions.
