Transfer box chain problem

Car is in for service and asked dealer to check a "clunk" that intermittently occurs on pull away. Aparently the transfer box chain is slipping.

Has anybody experienced this and what would generally cause it?

I'm assuming it's an Auto? (if you update your profile, we'll be able to tell....)
If you ask them to re-set the gearbox, see if that improves it.

You might benefit from a gearbox oil flush, but it won't be cheap...

How can a chain slip ? if it was slipping it would not for long as the teeth on the gears would break very quickly.

Does not sound as if thats your problem!

It can't Laughing

And the chain on the transfer box isn't like you'd expect.....it's actually more like a compound chain, with lots of individual chains side by side to make a very wide belt-like device.

I'd go with caverD3's idea as a first port-of-call as it's a common 'ish fault that causes this problem Thumbs Up
