after a weekend on Salisbury plain the 2005 manual D3 has developed a drive issue
If i turn the steering wheel hard left the N/S front wheel seems to grab as if its locking up momentarily.
Also when turning the ignition off there is a noticeable CLUNK from underneath the car.
Slight left to right play in N/S front wheel but no play up and down.
I think the clunk is coming from the transfer box solenoid as when i disconnect the 2 pin electrical connector to it the clunk does not happen when switching the car off.
Strange as well is with the 2 pin connector disconnected the drive to the N/S front wheel no longer grabs when on full left lock????
No difference in high or low
I've changed the oils in both diffs, transfer case and gear box to rule out water contamination but now I'm stumped on what to do now.
I don't know if the solenoid is at fault or if something else is causing the issue?
Any advice on this issue would be greatly appreciated
Cheers
Dave

Problem solved
Hopefully this will be of help to someone else in the future.
It appears that the transmission suffered some sort of wind up following my trip to the plains which explains the grabbing sensation of the front wheels on full lock and the solenoid valve not engaging properly inside the transfer box (which was the clunking sound when switching off the ignition).
A scan with a diagnostic tool revealed a fault with the transfer box and recommended a re calibration as well as fault with the solenoid valve which also recommended a re calibration .
The car now drives as it should with no more grabbing on the front wheels and the solenoid no longer clunks when turning the ignition off.
i didn't think the Terrain Response system could lock up but it appears so.
I would also like to thank and recommend Paul at Hooters Garage in Scaynes Hill West Sussex for his help in solving this issue

Did you replace the solenoid or just have it recalibrated

mrEb, this is a fairly common issue. Happened to me as well. Change of fluid and a calibration fixed it with no further work. Sometimes the calibration needs to be done twice.
The calibration is really the key in my experience. I changed fluid only first, and while it helped, the TC still locked on very tight turns in a car park. After calibration all was well. If your fluid is really gunky, you may need to do the change and calibration twice with some miles in between. 2008 LR3 HSE, 4.4L V8

It’s a problem with the transfer box as realized by the original poster in their follow up. 2008 LR3 HSE, 4.4L V8
