Transmission major failure

Hi Guys....Travelled back from France to the UK yesterday in the 2008, Disco 3,HSE, Auto.Went like a dream for over 560km from mid France to Dieppe and from Newhaven up the M40 to just past High Wycombe where "Transmission fault" appeared on the dash display and a few seconds later there was the sound of metal hitting, I presume the bell housing. The engine died and managed to coast onto the hard shoulder. The smell of burning or hot ATF became present in the car. Tried to start the engine and all I could hear was the sound of the starter motor spinning away but the engine not turning over. Waited a couple of hours for recovery and the car is being taken to a garage in N.Wales for gearbox (Incl. Transfer box) replacement.
I feel the auto box is totally wrecked and a good chance that the Flex drive plate/flywheel has broken due to the fact that the starter turns but the engine doesn't. The EML is lit.
Where is the CPS located, is it on the flex disc or elsewhere ? because if it's at the flywheel end maybe it could also be damaged.
Any thoughts or comments appreciated.

PS the Auto box was flushed and filled with Mannol AG55 ATF and a new filter fitted about 25K miles ago and has been running fine. No signs of ATF fluid loss when the car broke down or since the gearbox service. Big Cry

Crank sensor is on the flywheel

I’d be worried about engine failure.
Cambelt or crank

Thanks for quick responses Guys.

I was thinking along the lines of the gearbox suddenly seizing and possibly causing the flex plate to break up. The cambelt (Dayco) together with the HFP belt were changed around 50K miles ago. Why did the sudden smell of burnt ATF appear ?
No doubt all will be revealed when the boxes are removed from the engine in a couple of days.
When the recovery truck came, I couldn't move the gear selector from Park, took hell of a pull on the release cable to get Neutral before being winched onto the truck

Oil pump covers fail resulting in the cambelt tensioner pushing out the front and cambelt cover cracking. So that’s obvious if you look for it.

The car has been dropped off at the garage this morning by the recovery people. I am going down there this afternoon to see them. Early days as I don't expect they have yet made a start on it. Will get them to try turning the engine over by hand when they get it up on the hoist.
They have diagnostics so that may guide them with any logged faults (Engine wise). I know that it has the later type oil pump fitted.
Will update as and when I get further information. Arrow

UPDATE
Went to the garage to be "Officially" told that the engine is totally shot, probably due to fracture of the lower timing belt tensioner despite the oil pump being the later type which to me throws cold water on the hype about fitting the later type pump.
They recommended, if I decide not to scrap the car, which I have decided lives on, to go for a used, preferably LR engine, not Jag due to all the stripping and refitting of parts which takes time and not to go for a reconditioned unit as they have been failing due to poor quality bearings (Chinese or similar ??) being used. New engines or short engines are not available.
So, I am scouring the web looking at low mileage complete, or almost, Disco or RR sport units.Obviously whatever I buy will have a new timing and HPFP belt kit fitted and preferably be Euro 4 with as many ancillaries left on as possible.
Body off fitting, including the replacement gearboxes I have will be £1500, including oils & filters etc plus I have to supply the engine.
Any tips on what to look for with the engine would be appreciated Guys.
Can't start on the car for a couple of weeks due to them being busy as the 2 post lift will be taken out of action whilst my job is being done.
The garage is purely LR with everything from S2's to Overfinch Rangies in the yard and workshop

Jag engine is maybe some extra work in changing some stuff out.... it is far less work then to build up a short block..... since that is 100% the same between the two “brands”

Jag engine’s can be found with far less miles on them than the most land rovers with good engines..

So what you can loose on time, you can win on an fresher engine.. imho..

One day extra work is not that much money (with such a whole project in mind..) when it gives you lets say 100k mls less

Been there done it..

Good luck with your choice
 Best regards
Harold

Fitted by Stratstone Land Rover, 2017 during Timing belt change at 96K according to the LR history.
I replaced the belts (Timing, fuel pump and Serpentine (Alternator etc plus water pump) with a Dayco full kit including tensioner (top) at 150K and before you ask, used the correct locking tools and the car started and ran perfectly afterwards. I can't imagine LR used a spurious ( Foreign Embarassed ) oil pump to save money !! Car has done 187K to date and has oil & filter changes every 5K miles-6K at the most using Mahle filters and Mannol fully synthetic oil which is far less mileage between oil/filter changes than the interval stated in the service book. The air and pollen filters are changed every other oil change 10-12K intervals. Car has never used or lost oil between changes, level checked weekly and never required topping up.

You were lucky you broke down in the UK. Lot of the small print in European Recovery states that if the cost of recovering your car to the UK is more than the value of the car, then they wouldn't do it... was always a bit of a nervous point when we took our D3 to France twice a year that it would effectively be written off (ancient high miler, but superb condition) on a breakdown.
