Transmission noise when in high range gears 1 & 2 |
|
Hi all,
I am looking for some advice on the noise of the transmission in high range gears 1 and 2.
On a normal day I will start the Disco and drive off and the she will sound quiet (for a 4x4) but occasionally it will sound like it is in low range and has a real power sound (like it does in low range), it does not seems like it has dropped into low range as the revs are the same as it should be for high range, it just sounds like it has a lot more grunt.
any ideas on this?
Cheers,
Jim

Could be the thermo clutch operated fan it tends to be more of a growl than a whoosh. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

There was a post about it recently:
"I find that if you back off the throttle a little & just let the car cruise at a low throttle setting for the first hundred yards or so, it will calm down & disappear."

Pretty normal but not consistant as to when it happens. When it gets hot it can really get noisey. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Last week I had the Disco looked at by LR and they have identified the issue being a dying alternator, the transmission noise I was referring to, was in fact the Electric Fan kicking into ultra drive as the Disco thinks there is a problem with the car and will automatically put the fan on its fastest speed.
Got the quote for the new Alternator $1,050.00 + shipping + fitting, thank god for the extended warranty!!!!
