We buy a bloody great turkey every year, even when there is just the two of us and it gets more expensive every year. Last year we purchased just a crown and it cost almost as much, we seemed to be eating it forever....
So this year I went with SWMBO to do the main Xmas food shop. "Man Logic" prevailed, but I am starting to think she will make me suffer over the Xmas period. I convinced her that buying a Turkey crown at £15.00, when two huge turkey breasts from the reduced section, at just £5.60 was far better value and made sense.
My logic is:
No having to have a Turkey defrosting in the kitchen for days
No having to get up early to put the Turkey in the oven
No juggling space in the oven
No having to keep poncing about basting it and other stuff
No huge Turkey with half a breast eaten cluttering up the kitchen
No endless Turkey based meals over Xmas
No picking all the last bits of meat off to freeze or make a curry out of
No huge carcass stinking up the bin until the fortnightly bin collection finally happens after the Xmas break
Two nice Turkey breasts cooked on Xmas day, one for dinner and one for cold meats and pickles Boxing day........makes perfect sense to me!! ------------------------------

SWMBO's just bought the frozen turkey from Tesco, bit of shuffling in the freezer and in it goes. All the usual bits & bobs in the fridge. We did debate just getting enough for the 2 of us (turkey roll/crown/joint7 for Chrimbo day but I quite like the week long turkey fest. We did hit on a good formula for the day though. Starter for lunch, main course for dinner and pud for supper, or even next day.

Sounds like a great idea. Everyone loves a nice bit of breast without the hassle of the rest of it.
I fear the worst though. Here, SWMBO started "getting a few extra things in ready" over a month ago and the kitchen calendar is marked up with which shops we are going to and when, which basically takes out every evening between now and the big day

Good move. After a council of war we decided a few years ago that turkey was off the menu. Now we are have a rib roast as standard. With the attentions of extended family it only lasts a few days. Sealed it last well in the fridge. If I ever feel like turkey I go and visit them.Once you have defeated the idiots any job is half done. Pity there are so many idiots to defeat.

We got a present of a turkey last Christmas and we boned stuffed and rolled it, it worked out great as you could just take a slice off when ever needed and cold in the fridge it was the size of a sliced pan. This year we’ve ordered a small turkey and will cook it normally. We’ll probably take the legs off before cooking and freeze them to be cooked at a later date instead of a roast chicken.
As I told my SWMBO the shops are only shut one day.........
What's the point of filling up every available space in the freezer and fridge, stuffing the cupboards to bursting and have boxes of other foodstuffs stacked in my home office.....?
All those Xmas special foods will be reduced on special offer after Xmas day.......feck me, we live less than 5 minutes from every major supermarket known to womankind!! ------------------------------

The only thing we've got extra above what we normally have for a Sunday roast is the all important pigs in blankets.
I banned turkey from the menu this year, just having a good joint of beef instead. Can't stand the endless turkey sandwiches/curries/stir fries!

We had the discussion too. I said no to turkey as there's only the two of us. Suggested duck but finally agreed on brisket like last year. I'll stick it in a lowish oven in the morning with veggies and good bit of red wine. By the time we get back from the pub at lunchtime it'll have shrunk but be oh-so-tender and yummy.
As I bought it, it's a big bit of meat so there'll be some left for boxing day too... Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Just herself and me so ordered a fresh turkey crown from the local farm shop. You book a day that you want to collect it and it will be ready when you get there. It's only five minutes away so if we get there early we might actually see the bird getting the last rites. 2014 MY Discovery XS Indus Silver. Sadly gone.
