Tyre choice on my new Disco
Hi, my newly-acquired Discovery 3 has come with 4 new tyres:
The previous owner has put Pirelli Scorpion Zeros on the front and the more aggressively-patterned General Grabber ATs on the back. Is this a common thing to do - or can you see any reason for it? I wondered whether the ATs maybe gave too much vibration through the steering? Just for the record, they were fitted by the same garage, at the same time.
What is the consensus on these two tyres? Visually, I much prefer the ATs.
Thanks.

Generally considered best not to mix & match, curious they were put on at the same time. There's pros & cons to all tyre types, what's best (apart from looks) depends on what you're doing with the car. Road only, snow, ice, mud, tracks, etc, etc, etc.

Yes, that what I thought.
95% road, 5% light off-road along riverbanks, etc, sometimes with a small boat in tow. (Can get quite muddy/slippy in winter).

You'll be amazed how good the D3 is on standard road rubber. ATs offer more off-road capability but at the expense of on-road grip, noise & economy. Pays yer money etc.
I took my D3 on the LRO course at Yarwel quarry a few years back on scorpion zeros and was amassed at how it went places some tricked up d2 on mud tyres wouldn't I doubt them good on the road but they wear quickly I'm back on wranglers and very happy with themRange Rover Westminster 4.4 TDV8 what a car

Thanks for the replies.
Please excuse my lack of knowledge, but what were the standard tyres - the Pirellis?

Pirelli Scorp Zeros or Goodyear Wranglers. There are other choices out there (some good, some dire) but those are the most common choices.

ATRs are the discerning choice, they'll be going on once the present Wranglers get to 3mm. I ran them for prob 80k miles on my D3 through all conditions from road to desert to snow to mud. They were on her when she drove her last.

I had Pirelli Scorpion Zeros on my D3 when bought new. They were excellent for my mainly road use. Reliable, quiet and excellent grip under all conditions. Only problem was they needed replacement every 16000 miles. I regarded them as worth the cost. My D4 came fitted with Goodyear Wrangler tyres. I've been happy with their performance especially with their better wear. At 20000 miles their tread depth is just on 4mm left. I will replace them by winter as I will have put another couple of thousand miles on by October. This time partly as a result of discussions on the forum I will probably change to Pirelli Scorpion ATRs. In forty six years of LR ownership I have never needed anything other than the standard dual purpose tyres supplied except when swapping over from the then standard cross ply ones on the IIa to Michelin M and S radials. Magic! 2014 MY Discovery XS Indus Silver. Sadly gone. Second last LR of forty eight years continuous ownership.
