Tyre inflating itself?? Help please...
Hi All
Have just been to garage to check tyre pressure before a journey tomorrow.
I just travelled about 180 miles yesterday and before travelling checked tyre pressures and set them at 33 front 36 rear.
Tonight at the garage the rears were still 36, one front was 32 and the other front was 50!!! But I havent touched them since I drove the 180 miles.
Any ideas what is going on??

but doesn't explain why it did one front tyre right and the other wrong?

think heat can affect pressure...but that's a big increase and the others have stayed correct

hot wheel is not wobbly or tyre defect generating extra heat

don't think so - it was second hand but looked to be in perfect condition.
that wheel does 'squeak' every now and then when i am parking but garage said they could not see anything wrong with it...

think if it was an over heating disc transferring heat to the wheel you might have smelt it ...take it there was no brake issues....see what the readings are in the morning...a strange one ..

One thing is for sure, it's a physical impossibility for a tyre to inflate itself. Short of pressure fluctuations due to temperature changes, the only way it could get to 50psi is if you put it in there by accident.Richard

could be a dodgy valve ... if the centre pin bit is sticking, AFAIK most gauges just record how much pressure that can exert on the middle bit of the gauge.

Unless you measured it before and after with the exact same guage I'd say the 2nd reading was suspect. If your tyre was at 50psi you'd notice - it would likely be riding high on a central ridge and handling would be pretty bad if it was a front tyre - probably like driving on ice on that corner. I'd measure them all with a trusted gauge.
i'd still be looking at a stuck valve. if your gauge has a pointy bit for letting air out, give it a poke with that. I'd normally say use your finger nail, but it it ejected a bit of debris at speed, you'd only blame me for any injury it did you.
Then recheck the pressure.
