tyres : 107 or 111

I have asked this in another thread but thought I'd make it a bit more prominent.

Currently looking for tyres and most websites say I need 255/55R19 111 rated tyres. And that's what I have at the moment so is what I expected.

Some sites - Costco being the one of main interest due to a current offer - show 107 rated tyres as suitable.

I looked in handbook and it muddied the waters totally ...

as it shows 107 is good but doesn't list the 255/55 size (it's mentioned in the "Winter Tyres" section but doesn't include load rating Banging Head )

since "107" translates as rated for 975kg (111 is 1090kg) and t'internet says "Curb weight 2,396–2,583 kg (5,282–5,695 lb)" (assuming that's a US site due to curb not kerb)

then that's surely under 650kg per corner so the 107's have a safety margin of ~50% so why wouldn't they suffice ?

your thoughts please oh wise ones.

I can only say that the 19” and 18” tyres I ran were always 111, with the possible exception of Goodyear MTR’s, as I can’t remember their rating.

Sorry I can’t be more helpful. Thumbs Up

The insurers would have more of an issue with load rating than speed rating IMO...e.g. I had the older MTRs with a 99mph speed rating ... they accepted them on the basis that I shouldn't be doing that speed in any case.

ISTR from previous threads that the issue with load ratings are circumstances when a greater level of the weight of the vehicle temporarily rests on one or two tyres.

From what I'm finding the load rating is linked to the speed rating ... so you're right that it's for circumstances beyond normal driving.

so a 111H tyre will stand suddenly getting 1090kg of weight applied if you were to slam on the brakes at 130mph.

I’d feel more comfortable sticking with 111, despite the lure of a Costco bargain. 👍

rang Costco and they checked ... and offered Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 255/55 R19 111W for slightly less money than the 107V VECTOR-4-SEASON-SUV-G2 instead.

downside is they don't have 4 tyres in stock but will honour the deal for tyres ordered before it expires on Sunday.

The more the sidewall height is in relation to tyre width, the higher rate you need.

Basically it's to do with sidewall deformation under load, it might do the weight of the vehicle, but under certain circumstances forces might impose a greater weight than that which exceed the designed values.

In normal circumstances this would more than likely never happen, but the manufacturers need to cover all bases when some in society feel the need to litigate for their own incompetence.

I thought 255/50/19 (as shown in the OP picture) was the RRS1 size only.

the handbook info looks wrong, as it shows 17's and 18's, and 235 and 50 series tyres, which aren't correct for D4. Go off the label on the door.

So 111's if running 19's, and 109's if running 20's

the 107 rating is on the RR Sport which is slightly lighter and hence needing a lower load rating per tyre.
