England 2007 Discovery 3 TDV6 Base 7 Seat Auto Tonga GreenDiscovery 3
TYRES

My use is about 60% road and 40% fields, muddy lanes etc etc. The current tyes I have , and it came with ,seem to be pretty much a standard road tyre type , Michelin i think but i am not into reading the side of tyres.

What are you asking? Do you want to know what model /make of tyre you have?

All the standard tyres will cope with the type of work you describe. I assume from other posts you use it for shooting. I don't think you'll have a problem on the standard tyres, although the alloys are a bit vulnerable.

Have you done any of the LR Experience courses, they will make far more difference than the tyres on the type of offroading that I think you mean.

I have done the o/r courses with my old td5 but as yet have not got round to one with the D3. Now the weather is getting bad I am more inclined to sign up for the next course. Just seems to me that this one seems to have more trouble in certain places than my old one did in the same places. These were not all at shoots but off road on fire gaps in my woodland area
which has inclines up to about 30 deg.
PS I have never been in a Tesco car park as people seem to be implying.

Malcolm there are a few tyres now to fit the D3. So rather than speculate go and buy some 17" wheels as many of us have and then you can place some 80/20 tyres on the car. That is 80% off road. I and others have used them in some very serious situations.

Failing that if you have 19" wheels you can fit Wranglers and I believe Generals.


The picture dipicts my car ascending a steep slippery slope and it is more than 30 degrees I can assure you and I stopped half way up.

Agree with Pelyma that the driver makes much more difference than the tyre.

There are fancy knobbly mud Cooper tyres (look for threads in the last couple of months for much more information) - but to my mind these are largely overkill for the kind of driving you are outlining.

Knowing how to drive your car properly (through the LRE day) should give good rewards. - not that I am suggesting you cannot drive adequately at the moment! It's just that the LRE instructors can teach you a lot about how to make the most of the D3.

I wouldn't worry that people might think you a frequenter of supermarkets. If you are doing 40% offroad driving then that makes you a hardcore offroader in relative terms to most of us on the board!

what about the 'free' one ? ....did you get your LRE voucher with either / both vehicles?

I had the standard Wranglers - until they wore out. They were good on and off road, but got noisy toward the end of their lives.

I now have Michelin Synchrones fitted. Supremely quiet on the road - much quiter than Wranglers - and in the snow last week were absolutely fine.

My use is 95% on road (yes the wife does sometimes go to Tesco's in it) 5% off road.

Thanks all,
I get the general idea, I will use my free vouchers ( both sets) and play with one of LR's D3's. Then I guess it's time to make changes, if needs be, to wheels tyres etc etc. The police ( who i was helping as they did not have a 4x4 available at the time) driver said he felt the tyres I have are more on road and they do not fit them to thier D3. Unfortunately they left with the joker they had just arrersted before he told me what they fit!!

The Tixover driving day last weekend showed just how far you can get on standard road tyres - yes the Coopers/Wranger MTR/etc will make the car a bit more stable, but the D3 with Terrain Response on the standard factory tyres is absolutely stunning off road.
