Tyres for deep snow
My d3 currently has 19" standard rims and I cant seem to get hold of any steel rims. What would be the best tyre that will fit this rim. We live in the middle of nowhere and we get really bad snow

If you want one set of tyres a 3PSMF rated tyres like geolanders (GO15) or Grabber AT3 would no well and a set of Maxxtrax or similar
If you can spring to two sets of wheels then a dedicated winter tyre set05 D3 V8 HSE, LR Passion tree bars, wildbear compressor guard, LRP switch panel, ARB rear locker + compressor, Trigger 6 shooter electrical system

There are cheaper chains, König's Easy-fit are pretty good.

The problem is when you come out of deep snow onto ploughed roads that usually have the thin coating of crap and ice, at which point you need winter tyres to be properly safe. There's no silver bullet (tyre).PAGODA
For us a little further up north, everybody uses two sets of wheels and shift for the winter season. And the common opinion is to use dedicated snow tires for the winter.
Personally I use Nokian Hakkapeliitta, studded. Takes you everywhere, especially with a Disco. There are studless versions as well if you're not allowed to have studs. I can recommend Nokian, the Fins know their winter stuff. Perhaps not the cheapest available alternative but worth the money.

Definitely have two sets of wheels, you can pick up some old 19 inch D3 HSE rims for next to nothing . All proper winter tyres are excellent now. I have had 2 sets of Vredestein Extreme - very hard wearing but less good in standing water when getting worn. I have had 2 sets of Pirelli Alpine. Excellent snow ice tyre but have worn quite quickly and I have had a lot of punctures in them. I am going to look at Continental next.
Winter tyres are rubbish in mud.
I have the Spikes Spider too, but you need to drive quite slowly in them. I broke a set once.d4 HSE

For me, I think the Scorpion AT+ IS a silver bullet tyre.
I use them all year round for long road trips, some greenlining, skiing in the winter and I really can't see where the compromise is... unless you are really intent on pulling some G's round bends but who can be bothered to do that in a Disco.
I have the Spikes Spider too, but you need to drive quite slowly in them.
I haven't got the paperwork in front of me, but IIRC the recommended top speed for them is 30 MPH.
I think that this is typical for most chains, but stand open to be corrected.

Agree with most of above, my favourite winter tyres so far (on a front wheel drive I will say) were the Michelin Pilot Alpin, worked amazing on the A6. Downside..... expensive. Since then I've bought Nokian for mine and wife cars, and recommended to neighbours who have been super happy.
Disco wise I now run for last few years GG AT3 with no problems whatsoever (other than to fast driving round a round about) which are snowflake and M+S rated.RLD CB Bracket

Never heard of these. Will def take a look, although my LR4 came with new Nitto Grappler G2 20s that, whilst they look good, are not good on ploughed roads/compacted snow.PAGODA
I can vouch for the Pirelli AT+. I have them as summer tires. Excellent for terrain use and surprisingly nice on tarmac. Silent and with reasonable fuel consumption. Only drawback compared to a regular tire is as usual longer stopping distance. But with this large and heavy vehicle I tend to drive a little more relaxed so that somewhat compensates.

Nokian get my vote, have been converted in recent years.

Good points, excellent in snow and ice, hard to get the traction control to kick in
Wear well
Work well in summer too
tough well constructed side walls
Pretty decent on prices, pretty much normal tyre prices.
Work well in mud too
Bad Points
Very few if any of main tyre shops stock them, so have to buy on-line (plenty of choice) and then find local outlet to fit which adds a £40 to £80 to overall price, but still have found this cheaper than usual suspects, just a bit more faff D4 Landmark MY16 Santorini Black THE LAST
