** Updated** Got a bit of a grumble....

This has been noticeable for the past couple of thousand miles, but it seems to be developing. I am noticing a faint rumbling vibration at speeds 30 mph upto 70, after which it seems to go away.

It is too high frequency to be wheel balance or tyre. If I were in my Defender I would be checking the propshaft UJ's. I have looked at the rear prop shaft and all seems good as new.

The car has only done 37k, and it is felt as a humming vibration in the steering, and a general 'hum' about the vehicle. It feels like driving over very small rumble strips.

The tyres are 20" Scorpions, nearing the end of life, but undamaged. I feel the miles are too low for it to be a wheel bearing, although I am not discounting this yet, as I have not jacked it up and checked.

2013 HSE Lux. Obviously still in warranty, just looking for evidence of other similar failures. Search reveals a few similar occurrences, but most threads are not concluded with a definite cause.

Any experiences?

Mine is ok so far.

I have,for the last year,noticed this when I put the GG AT's on.....the very faint vibration through the steering wheel is also most noticeable through the foot rest ?
I was convinced it was a wheel bearing initially,but they all checked out ok....one dealer thought it was down to the tyres,another thought it was the front diff (and changed it under warranty)......I've had 4-wheel alignment done,but it definitely gets worse when I change from road tyres to the ATs.
I'm getting more convinced there is a slight drivetrain issue,which the more aggressive tyre pattern,and deeper tread is amplifying Confused
My car has also done 37k,and I was starting to wonder if it was bushes the other day,but can't believe they need done already.
I'm sure the hum is from the tyres,but I can't see they would give me the other symptoms....which is why I'm wondering if they're throwing up a similar issue to the one you describe......
The best way I can describe it is,it feels like the ride comfort has got "coarser" if that makes sense ?

Wouldn't be the gearbox needing a flush, would it?
It's just way back on the D3 that was the symptoms experienced on initial take off or going up hills.
A flush and change of oil cured it.


I also had a transfer box replaced in my old D3 at around 17k miles.
Started off as a very light whine (to the point I was thinking I was imagining it), then over time it got to an unbearable drone.
But there were no vibrations, just the whine.
 I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

Is that only for d4?
When I changed my transfer box oil a few months it was very dark and I've had a rumble similar to Gareth's for some time.

Just for the later D4s I think, but ultimately the failure mode could be achieved by older D4s and D3s if they had a problem.

Its only done 37k in 18 months from new, so would be very surprised if the gear oil was degraded.

The TSB sounds like an interesting point. I better get it booked in. You don't happen to have the TSB number do you Robbie?

Sorry I don't have a Topix subscription running at the moment as the price is getting quite silly. There is another known issue with suspension and steering vibration that is also subject to a TSB but the rumble strip noise makes me think of the transfer box.

^ yeah good point, maybe the epb is binding slightly.
So after a drive, best check if the hubs are hot.

Had a case in the D4 that felt as if I was driving over big rumble strips.
Mine was quite severe though as I had even pulled over thinking I had a rear flat tyre.
Turned out to be the EPB binding and was recovered back to the dealer.
 I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

Situation:

The customer may report a vibration which can be felt through the steering wheel, floor pan and or front seat at between 2400-2800rpm during medium to heavy acceleration (not cruising or light load). The issue may also be accompanied by a short duration low frequency boom/drone felt in the cabin at the stated rpm range.

This version has been issued for a change to the Service Instruction.


NOTE: The issue is best confirmed using command shift manual mode and accelerating through the affected rpm range.



Cause: Powertrain torsion mode where the transfer box is effectively torsioning/twisting on the rear of the transmission. Suggested Customer Concern Code - K01.



Action: Should a customer express concern, follow the Service Instruction outlined below.

1. Raise and support the vehicle (see TOPIx Workshop Manual, section 100-02).






2. Install the damper and fixing bolt to the vacant threaded hole in the transfer case.
•Tighten the bolt to 75 Nm.











3. Lower vehicle.

That sounds exactly like the problem I am having as well, D4 was in at the dealers Monday but it didn't do it for them Big Cry But they renewed the brake switch, so hopefully no more hesitation issues when accelerating, they adjusted the switch last time and it cured the problem for about a week before the hesitation returned.

After both my limp home experiences http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic117273.html I've felt the same hesitation in acceleration afterwards - which makes me think brake switch - not had it happen for a while but think next time it does the brake switch will get swapped out!
