Urgent Help/Advice required - CV joint \ diff

I'm currently in the process of replacing my front NS half shaft. The inner CV boot has been split for a long time and the CV joint is knackered. I've got to a stage where the shaft has seperated from the CV joint at the diff and I cannot get CV joint out of the diff. I have tried alsorts to get it to come and no joy. Its now been 4 hours trying to get it to come and I'm at the stage of pouring a gallon of petrol over it and burning the bloody thing!

Any advice on how to get it out would be massively appreciated.

Note: I've got the luxury of cold concrete and axle stands to work with

A brass drift and a lump hammer.
Assuming you’ve tried a long prybar and rotating what’s left of the joint to balance the pressure on it.

You need two pry bars on either side of the joint and give it quick jerks to pop it out, or as Ian suggested turn it as you hit it.

Cheers for the replies so far. I've given up for the night as its now -1c and likely to get colder.

looks to be quite hard to get in with a drift - especially lying under it with it on axle stands.

Struggling to get in with 2 pry bars aswell. I've tried using one bar and rotating the CV joint and trying to work it out. I can pull it about 2-3mm then can feel the wire clip on the end of the shaft hitting the inside and it wont come any further.

Going to make up a puller of some sort tomorrow thar can get in behind the CV joint and have a long bar on it that I can whack with a hammer to pull it out.

This is certainly the worst "2-3 hour" job I've done on it so far.

It’s the quick jerk or thump that’s the crucial bit, that’s What compresses the round section circlip enough to pop it out of the groove it sits in. Just applying a steady force will not do it.

Remove the crossmember under the diff casing

Position prybar under diff onto inner face of CV joint

Hit prybar with hammer

Thumbs Up

Thats it all done. Big thanks to Disco_Mikey for his top notch advice to remove the crossmember. 2 whacks and it was out.

Just the diff oil to change now and hopefully all is good.

NS wheelbearing has no movement but it sounds rough when you spin the wheel, so thats the next job to tackle - on a dry day!

Thanks again for all the suggestions and advice Thumbs Up
