Whatever they try to flog you when you arrive, please do not be tempted by a Ford Mustang.
The Mustang I had a couple of weeks ago to drive Highway 1 is, quite possibly, the worst piece of junk I have ever had the misfortune to drive.
It was the 4.0L V6 version, which was desperately underpowered. The auto box took three days to change on kick down and it was about as basic a Base 5 Seater D3 inside. It did have air con, mind.
Avoid the Mustang at all costs.
If there's 4 or 5 of you going, I would recommend renting one of the Merc GLs, if money is no object. Anything European, basically. Americaland, on the whole, still has a fair bit of catching-up to do when it comes to car manufacturing.

Don't get the Mustang. Its just horrible. The suspension is soft/loose and it sways and wobbles like a boat. I made the mistake once on a business trip.
So four of us from my department was there. All in different flights from different countries and we all hired cars from the airport. I booked a standard 4 door sedan and got a free upgrade to a mustang. Then I found out two other colleagues also did the same. The smarter one got a 4 door Japanese sedan with a V8 or something.
As we were staying in the same hotel - we all shared one car to travel to the office in the mornings. And guess which car we used???
There were 3 mastangs sat in the hotel car park

I agree with Dubbs why go to to the US and rent European. You just pay more and get less choice!
I love the "Fun" of US cars and especially their huge 4X4's....
PS: Just sold my Mustang
PPS: Plus the ICE ICE BABY air conditioning....

if you only need 2 seats then money allowing i would rent a corvette
if i couldnt afford the vette it would be a camaro but try get the v8 i had the v6 a couple of years ago and it went well enough never found it patcualy lacking but it wasnt a v8 seemed to need lots of revs

The first car in the OP is a Ford Edge. I lived in the States for a few years and a friend had one. Actually a pretty nice car and has Ford Sync (good multimedia set up). Watch out though as some rental companies have an electronic speed limiter set up on them.
I agree with the comments about going all that way to rent what you already drive (or even could drive) . I leased a 5.3l V8 pick up while I was there. 17mpg and such a useful car. Loved it and wasn't going to drive anything I could get here.
Rental wise, if you want something Disco sized, I'd rent the next size up from the Edge, the Ford Explorer (new model waay better than the old model) or else for something different an F150 pick up (if there are not too many of you and you can throw your cases in the back cab - again latest models are big improvements on the old) A Honda Pilot is another good car, pretty much unique to the US but hard to find in rental. After that the SUV rental choice gets samey.
Most rental companies will let you swap within your group, and love it when you upgrade so when you pick it up, have a walk about and see what you fancy.

We did Route 66 (plus some detours) last November and had pre-booked a Range Rover. Only to be told when we got there that there weren't any.
They gave us the choice of whatever we wanted that was in the parking lot. We took a Chevrolet Tahoe in the end as it had the highest spec. DVD system etc for the kids, fridge and that sort of thing which was great for the trip.
Absolutely great for highway cruising and HUGE inside compared to a disco. But we had to do quite a bit of light offroad driving to explore some canyons and some long dirt roads and it didn't like holding its position! All over the place constantly and although amazing on tarmac, as soon as you're off it then it's a different story.
If you're doing highways then go for something American just for the experience. If there's any gravel or dirt to be seen then take the Disco, because you know you won't find better.

On another occasion during a family visit we rented this thing. I think they are Lincoln Navigator or something. Very luxurious. It had power folding side steps and the third row seats also fold away electrically.
