Using removable towball

Hi,

Soon to set off on first trip with the Disco 3 which has the LR removable towball.

Is the engagement of the towball when it is pushed into its mount completely foolproof?

In other words hopefully I cannot fit it incorrectly where it might pull out and have the caravan come adrift once underway? Sad

Always been used to big nuts and bolts holding towballs in place in the past

there is a bit of red on show by the green knob, this will disappear when correctly engaged. Keep checking rear view mirror though because it hard to tell whether you are towing anything by 'feel'

Have towed my caravan several times now (1000 miles or so) using the removable towbar and have yet to experience a problem with it. Push the towbar firmly into its slot and the locking mechanism automatically engages, the green sleeve rotates and the red warning band should no longer be visible. Turn the key and remove it . Now try turning the green sleeve to remove the towbar. It will turn a bit (exposing a bit of the red band) but you should be unable to turn it all the way to unlock the towbar.

You will get all sorts of noises coming from the towbar area when towing, some of which can be quite alarming if you are not used to it but they are nothing to worry about. The towbar does move around in its socket a little; mine has gone quite shiny in places where it's rubbing the inside of the socket.

One area I will keep a close eye on though is the locking pin that protrudes from the front of the towbar when it is engaged – if that gets badly worn it could create problems.
