VAG EA189 Service Action: Should he?

My Dad has just received an email from Audi requesting that he either books or declines the 'emissions scandal' service action update to his A4 Allroad 3.0tdi.

Rant: The email says:

Quote:
To book the EA 189 voluntary service action, please click the 'Book' button above. We have a number of appointment options - and you won't be charged for this work.

I know exactly why they've approached it in this manner but, for may, and probably my Dad included, WTF is EA189 supposed to mean!!!!! What a load of Censored !

Advice: There are a lot of comments out there from forum folk (not this one) telling you to avoid it like the plague. It's not a fix to the issue, but instead another work-around, an re-map if you like.

Comments include:

Quote:
Dont do it, there is a serious risk your car will suffer from it. I have a VW with this engine so have been watching and searching on this subject for months. You dont say how old your car is but in general the older higher mileage cars have more problems than newer models, the smaller capacity units up to 1.6L are worse than the 2.0L. Thats just my estimation from reading hundreds of posts.

The service update removes the cheat but also retunes the car so that it can pass EURO5 test without it. Every variation of every model needs a different remap so its hard to predict for any one car what the effect will be. VAG have admited more soot is produced and the DPF regenerates more frequently due to greater use of the EGR valve. This has implications for the life of these expensive parts.

VAG are using a whole range of "tools" to achieve the NOx reduction, fuel timing, injection patern, injection pressure, turbo boost, EGR flow and possibly changing emissions sensors trigger pionts.

Quote:
Most owners I know are leaving well alone. There appears to be only potential downsides and no gain to the owner. Largely a PR exercise

So what do you think my old man should do? It's a 59 plate A4 Allroad with probably 85k on the clock. I would say leave it be, forget the service action.

Thoughts?

Thumbs Up

Dont do it on newer cars there is a lot of problems after ego coolers, valves and various other problems so on a 59 plate car who knows leave it as it is I know people at Audi dealers and they are constantly fixing issues after the update.

My brother had a Skoda Superb diesel (think it was 2.0 litre 170bhp?) and his SWMBO booked it in as per letter she got. They reckon mpg fell by around 5mpg post the 'fix' (drop from 50mpg to about 45mpg).

Not scientific but we all know 'what our cars do' generally so they were disappointed.

They no longer have the car - sold it on to selling dealer at good price (not related to the scandal, no 'incentives' offered, just a straight deal) as thought prices would crumble but they don't appear to have done so?

Lots of reports of VW owners (I know of at least one) having to have 4 x new injectors fitted after having this update done. Potentialy 6 x new injectors in your Dad's case.

See: https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/askhj/answer/...agen-golf-

Unhappy VW Owner wrote:
Why have all four injectors failed on my Volkswagen Golf?
I have a 2010 Volkswagen Golf and was told by a garage that the high pressure fuel pump had disintegrated and blocked the injectors. I was later told by a main Volkswagen dealership that I had mis-fueled the vehicle with petrol. I knew that I had never filled this diesel vehicle with petrol and employed a chartered mechanical engineer to sample and test the fuel. The fuel was sent to a specialist lab and they found that the fuel was perfect and free from all contaminants and no metal swarf was in the fuel oil. I was told by the engineer to take the vehicle to a diesel specialist.

They found that the fuel pump was in perfect working order but that all four injectors were not working correctly. As there was no issue with the fuel and that the injectors were not damaged by metal particle and that the high pressure fuel pump was and still is in perfect working order could you provide me with an explanation as to why all four injectors could fail at the same time.

Honest John's explanation:

Honest John wrote:
Well done. But if this happened after the NOx emissions fix, the very simple reason is that the fix involves programming the injectors to make a third cycle for each stroke. This is 50% more work, so if they were already getting a bit worn, the extra cycle could lead one or more of them to fail. If you had the fix this is a "direct consequence" and Volkswagen is liable to replace the injectors FoC (and the dealer is morally liable to refund all of your costs as a result of his lies).

Hope this helps.

JLR would not entertain such a claim, IMO; They seem to have lost all sense of what Customer Service is lately.

My Discovery Sport will be binned shortly, and I won't be staying with the brand for various reasons once it's gone.

None of the current model range appeal/are affordable (there are now better alternatives for less money), I've had atrocious experiences with dealers, LRCS, my Discovery Sport and the latest thread on crankshafts not being covered by JLR Approved Warranty just epitomises my experiences with them over the last 14 months.

United Kingdom 2015 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 HSE Auto Corris GreyDiscovery 4

I had my Golf 6 1.6Tdi done early in the year at 62k miles, its a 12 plate.

Easy enough booking process and the gave us a free valet kit with an assortment of chemicals for making the car shiney.

Initially I could feel a difference in performance, not huge just different and not as pokey as it was before. (relatively speaking for 105bhp heavy golf)

But the ECU learned and got back to what it was. MPG as before and no issues at all. 8k miles later no problems. Mine is not a town car though, 12-14k miles per year mix of schools runs, country driving and motorways.

A month afterwards I recieved a VAG headed letter stating VAG would investigate and consider any failure in the EGR, fuel injection or emission system up to 160k miles and 24months after the service action to see if it was related and 'responsibly and swiftly' to the customers complaint.

No, its not a proper warranty but if they are putting it in black and white its worth something.

My thoughts and experience so far anyway.
