It’s not just for yourself that it helps.
Somebody tried to abduct my grandson just before xmas.
He had the wits about him to leg it when they tried to get him in a van. Nobody had any cctv. So the police could not get the reg. So the people that tried it live to have another go somewhere else.

Hi,
Not traditional CCTV but we have a bunch of Nest Cameras. To be honest, it's more for reassurance than anything else. We live in a quiet sleep village with almost no crime. It's nice to be able to see what's happening at home if we need to. Our driveway has a camera that sends me a message and a video clip whenever anyone walks on it. It's interesting to see the number of people (perhaps 1 per month) who are maybe delivering leaflets or door-knocking who walk up the drive, hear my dogs going nuts, and then walk away (they're only Labradors, but they sounds like big dogs!). I don't think every leaflet deliverer is casing the house, but it surprised me.
We had an issue last year when our fibre line to the house was accidentally damaged by some workmen on the lane, and the footage was perfect for working out which contractor was responsible.
Nest is expensive, but easy to set-up and integrates really nicely with smoke alarms (if a smoke alarm goes off somewhere I get a phone notification and a video message too).
An unexpected bonus is if the kids are falling out with each other, we can quickly play back the footage and work out who started it!
I still think kids toys all over the place and a couple of loud dogs is the best deterrent to anyone breaking in. Significantly higher than average gun ownership in the village probably helps too!

Cheers Chaps
So any good recomendations without being over the top on costs. I was thinking 2 cameras out front, 2 out back with cables running aound the loft (I know I can get wireless but then these need batteries and its easy to get around inside the loft). Can I leave the recorder in the loft, I guess I can (as there's power up there already). I also guess a decent sized HD in the recorder. Do you go for continuous recording or just on activity. I'm thinking I might have an issue on the front with activity as the road is pretty close so anything going past would keep triggering the recording (as happens with the outdoor lights PIRs). Do the recorders have WiFi or is it RJ45 connection to the router? If the later I guess I couldnt leave the recorder in the loft, but does that bring wireless cameras back into play and just provide power to them via the loft?
Lots of daft questions so any practicle guidence is appreciated
Thanks

Power line network adapters solve the connectivity issue in the loft.
Most recorders default to recording 25 frames per second. If you drop this to 10 FPS you immediately gain 60% more storage capacity.
Loft access can get rather tight when you get towards the eaves!
Finally, don’t overlook the lighting capabilities of the cameras. Most bullet cameras have poor IR lighting sources. An ex-Disco3 / FFRR owner ......

Some advice I would give is go to a security specialist and most will have a suite that will show the performance of the cameras, really important if you want to read registration plates and understand importance of mounting heights. There is a big difference the more you pay the better the image that can be recorded. They will explain the HDD recorders + channels + WiFi capability + legalities.
I am sure you have thought about it but you will need help if you DIY ( from a responsible adult) to focus and monitor the field of vision on your viewing monitor. Walkie talkies, mobile or mobile house phones will help on installation.
A bit of crawling in the roof, plug and play and away you go. D3 2.7 Zermatt silver (not another one)

Mine paid for itself when it showed Tescos that it was their van that hit SWMBO's car causing £600-800 damage!!
They do act as deterant and record people cars etc.
Only real high end expensive stuff will record plates and faces well enough

You can when you need tech support and Swann tech support is quite poor "Never keep up with the Joneses. Drag'em down to your level. It's cheaper".

Chipping in again my first kit was a Costco offer on a Swann set of 4 no bullet cameras, it was priced well but I could have got it cheaper on the internet, went via Costco because of membership and guarantees.
To try and give an objective view the Swann kit just about covered what I wanted or so I thought. We have a large house with big garden and frankly it was a waste of money as the cameras were barely adequate to good. The kit was priced to sell to the average punter, price & convenience driven in a retail store environment. Pick it off the shelf, pay and install in a day.
We firstly upgraded cameras, then again with better cameras and more recently with even better cameras and HDD recorder. This has happened over a circa 10 year period. Even now I look at my system and think I would like even better images.
I said earlier go and see cameras in use in a specialist security retailer / installer. The reality is they will of course want to sell you stuff but you do not have to buy. What they will prove to you is the old adage you get what you pay for! When in Costco you see the set up it looks good but you see and recognise yourself and it is easily discernible to you “as you’. The reality is when you install that kit at home and see a ‘lurker’ you will not be able to produce a half decent image let alone determine whether male or female or black or white when you have a low end kit. You may not even be able to recognise the type of passing car! You do get what you pay for in a kit. D3 2.7 Zermatt silver (not another one)
