Also check your tyre pressures, although not your main fault they can magnify a fault particularly if front are over inflated, neither have you mentioned the condition of the anti- roll bar bushes, they will not cause vagueness unless you are really pushing on.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

update

so today i got my youngest lad to help me, i lifted the car to off road height, engine off, key in position 1, and got him to rock steering from left to right, there was lots of banging if he did it fast, and if i held the track rod bars i could feel it through them so i removed the gator and looked at the bit that comes out of the steering rack and when he rocked from left to right there was a definate up and down movement on the bit coming out of the steering rack, if it was the lower column banging would this transfer through the steering rack also if i start the car the banging is gone

Think I’ve got to the bottom of this one, hit her up in Ramps sump plate off and got my lad to rock steering engine off there is a definite knocking and I’m sure it’s coming from inside the steering rack as the lower shaft looks in good order with no stiffness or slack in the rubber part and if you touch the rack when the wheel is riced from left to right you can feel the knocking as well as here it so I think I’ll order a recon rack today unless anyone with more knowledge can add anything
