Speed rating W vs Y
Is there any reason why I wouldn’t want to put a tyre (Y) with a higher speed rating than my current, and advised for the D4, (W)??
I don’t very much the D4 could get anywhere near the 168 mph listed for the W, whereas the Y can apparently go up to 186 mph (which would be very scary in a Disco!!!)
You may need, & it would certainly be prudent, to check with your insurers.

(….I am an underwriter….!!)
Decreasing a risk would not have to be declared. Perhaps reducing from W to V may increase the risk so therefore you would have a point, but on the basis that V’s are meant to be capable of 149mph they are probably still overkill for a D4!
Perhaps there is something though to do with the weight or weight distribution or the heat generated etc. etc. that warrants a D4 needing a W 168 mph capable tyre even though it won’t do anywhere near that speed??
There are ‘better’ V rated tyres available, but am not going to risk anything by going lower than a W, my question still stands though if there is any reason why I shouldn’t fit a higher rated tyre??
Surely there can’t be…?!

I'm going the other way, from Vs (Wranglers) to H (Pirelli ATRs). Insurer (NFU) quite happy with that, I just explained that H = up to 130mph and the car is limited to 112mph. Besides, I usually plod along at 60mph on long hauls and will be going nowhere near 112mph.

Thanks, that makes perfect sense, glad they saw the logic.
I wonder what the logic is though regarding the D4 ‘needing’ a W?

Is it a case of what suits the car or what tyre size/spec is available from tyre manufacturers?

I'm guessing probably the later.
If the former, then perhaps higher rated tyres have, say, stronger side-walls or different compound rubber, or perhaps its just that they're stronger???
