Agreed - not trying to suggest that Man City is any different to any other top flight club.

But you're spot on about amateurs who achieve that level and still work for a living.

Of course, if the UK had a tax system like the US where you pay tax back to the US Treasury no matter where you are, it would be a moot point where top sports stars resided.

Anyone who makes full use of the provisions of tax legislation is entitled to keep whatever they can. The ones at fault are those drafting the legislation, not those using it.

So on a salary of £2.587m, the government rakes in £1.558m, or 60% (including all NI).

Indeed. I pay what my accountant tells me I owe the tax man and the VAT man, no more, no less. I must admit that I don't make use of all of the little bits and pieces that one can claim - Xmas party etc. - because I don't feel the need. Maybe I should but...

It's the same with all the big companies. If the law doesn't require them to pay tax, why would they. I'm not sure you can go to HMRC and voluntarily pay more tax that you should?

It's not just companies. I remember one of my Grans tried to have her cold weather allowance cancelled. She said she didn't need it - had a good enough pension for her needs - so wanted the money to go elsewhere. No can do - the system doesn't allow for it. She was advised to give the money to charity, I believe, if she wanted it do good elsewhere.

I have no doubt that if you tried to pay too much tax, they'd notice and send the excess back to you. They certainly do with individuals, anyway.

You can make, "patriotic gifts." This is a tradition dating back to the Napoleonic wars and the National Debt Reduction Act of 1823, in which citizens help reduce national debt by gifting money to the Treasury.

Following from what Scott55 said:

Our family know a whole range of former and current Liverpool players socially - ranging from 'Big Ron' Yeats back in the 70s through to some of the current squad - the more recent players less so than the older ones.

Back in their day the likes of Toshack and Heighway had supplementary incomes such as the local sports shop (I know one former Chelsea player who ran a motor factors); Hansen, Dalgleish etc managed to set themselves up from football related activities whilst appearing to play endless games of golf. However, some of the less well advised from the 80's and even 90's are now living relatively modest lives.

What sets the current generation of players apart is thet they have no need to do anything supplementary in order to generate income. Whilst there are some complete to55ers that the media like to expose, the vast majority of the players do a hell of a lot of good through charity work - especially childrens hospitals and homes, but numerous other 'unseen' examples too.

I don't blame them for earning what they do - hell, I would have done the same if I didn't have two left feet - it is 'the system' that has led to such huge wages. However, they do entertain a lot of people, week in week out, and are often misjudged IMHO.

To add to that, Ray Clemence owned a courier company whilst playing at Liverpool, had a number of Tansit vans with a pair of goal keeping gloves on the doors with Safe Hands written underneath.

Not important, just a bit of trivia.
