Oil Level

Morning all, I have another question for you. The garage that has done some work on my car have filled the oil up to the round bobble on the dipstick. My understanding is this is overfilled. I have a suction unit available to suck the excess out of the dipstick tube. So my question is, how much oil, roughly, do I need to remove?. Thanks in advance for your help. Bow down

The round bobble alone higher up? Yeah, it’s overfilled. Shocked The max is up to the fourth bar from the bottom. No idea on how much each bar represents in terms of volume, sorry.

I’m glad the V8 has a “normal” dipstick... Rolling Eyes

You certainly shouldn't drive it if it is grossly overfilled.

In the absence of advice from others you may have to do this by trial & error, as I had to do with a friends Ford Escort, which had been helpfully "topped-up" (literally) by a 17 year old son!

Good luck.

The round one way past the level indicators? Shocked

First make sure it is that bad, cus its a really difficult dip to use.
Oil isn't getting on it, just with being in the tube is it? Be sure the wire inbetween is covered in oil, by using a tissue to see if oil is drawn/absorbed off the wire.

remove, 0.25l, recheck, then upto the 0.5l marker, etc

Clean the sucker bottle out first (e.g with petrol), and you can always reuse the oil if you get it wrong or need it in a few months for the same car.

let us know how much you removed, to help others in future.

Thanks all for your prompt replies. Pete I have checked several times and the wire between the two is always covered by oil, but still really appreciate the advice. I hadn't thought about keeping the oil Thumbs Up

Surprised no one has made a proper dipstick with just plain metal and high low marks. The d3 one is just stupid in every way.

I have removed about 1.2 litres from the dipstick tube and it is still about quarter of an inch above max level on the dipstick. I have left it at this as a little overfill shouldn't be a problem, should it? Confused

Take some more out, it’s better a little under than over the full mark, be sure the engine is cold when checked as oil expands a lot when hot.
It is very easy to overfill as the difference between being under and over is very little, probably 1/4 of a litre.
Whoever overfilled it should be sorting it. Thumbs Up

Thanks m3dpo, the engine was warm when I drained it. I shall check it again in the morning when it's cold. I can't be bothered to go back to the garage as I have been back a couple of times about various issues already. But thanks for everyone's help Thumbs Up
