As a boat owner who spends time on the beaches of Devon, Cornwall or Hampshire every year, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been asked to ‘rescue Johnny’ as we call it.
Having been involved with a family orientated diving club since I was very young it’s a fact of diving and boating from UK beaches that you end up just considering it a part of your day.
It is a very common occurrence, but I must stress is undertaken willingly.

Nearly all parents are very grateful and overwhelmed by the experience, then take heed of advice to tie a long line to the inflatable and anchor it to the beach, or better still hold onto it.
I’ve even been known to lend out a long line to parents if they are camped out for the day close by on the beach.
There has even been the odd occasion where if we have several boats in the group we’ll leave one boat to cover the divers and tear back in response to a VHF call from one of our group on the beach with a handheld to ‘rescue Johnny’.

The odd parent however appears to believe their kids are the responsibility of anyone on the beach who has a boat, there is an expectation that you are there to carry out that rescue, and there are times when little Johnny is rescued more than once on the same day.

The general rule in our group is that on presenting Johnny back to his parents for the second time that day the inflatable has a hole in it about the width of a diving knife.
Sadly such action is taken more often than you’d think there could be such stupid parents, and is done to protect Johnny when there is nobody there to rescue him.
I’ve never had any grief or comeback from the parents for doing it, but I’ve seen at least one of our group who has.

We have on the other hand often seen Dads getting huge amounts of grief from Mums for letting the situation occur in the first place.

Nasher.
Heaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.

CALLER: "Hello. Is that Mrs N? I'm calling about your dog Bonnie's insurance"

MRS N: "Oh, hello. How can I help?"

CALLER: "Is she still a cross-breed?"

MRS N: "Err, yes.."

CALLER: "And what would you say Bonnie's weight is?"

MRS N: "When she last went to the vet she was 19 kg, so 'roughly 20 kg' "

CALLER: "Ah, if she is over 20 kg then she is no longer a 'medium' dog but a 'large' dog, which will mean another £70 on the premium"

MRS N: "That was a guess based on the last measured weight. She hasn't turned into a large dog, like a GSD"

CALLER: "You said 20 kg, so I have to take that".

MRS N: "I said 'roughly 20 kg'. That was an informed guess"

CALLER: "Ah, but you mentioned 20 kg, so that is what we have to use"

MRS N: "So, if she is ill and her weight drops to 18 kg, do I get a refund?"

CALLER: "No. You mentioned 20 kg, so that is what I use"

MRS N: "If it is so close to a boundary, wouldn't it be worth weighing her accurately first?"

CALLER: "No, you mentioned 20 kg, so that is what I use"

MRS N: "May I speak to your supervisor, please?"

CALLER: "I don't have a supervisor".

MRS N: "In that case, can you put me through to your complaints department. It all seems a bit odd to me"

CALLER: "Only I can instigate a complaint. You mentioned 20 kg, so that is what we will use"

I think the insurance industry as a whole needs to sleep with one eye open, once the whole PPI and other regulatory issues fade away/close down on credit cards, I reckon it's where the regulators will pick up next.

Pulled off the M6 yesterday and travelled behind a crappy old Vauxhall Zafira for the long slip 'lane' up to a roundabout. He was driving at a 'normal' speed of about 60'ish.

Driving along behind him I thought his front screen looked all 'misted up' and absentmindingly wondered if it gave a visibility issue.

As we approached the traffic roundabout I took the RH lane and as I pulled alongside him and ahead of him could see his windscreen was completely shattered, not 'badly cracked' but all in place and completely obliterated and crazed across its whole surface Shocked

He was going the same direction as me and was easily doing 60mph plus as I was only pulling away from him slowly at 70'ish.

Utter madness Confused

Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

A house move already complicated by Japanese Knotweed, grandfathered sewerage rights and many other things has been brought to a halt (if not completely kyboshed) thanks to our buyers' buyer using a national 'online' conveyancing company recommended by their financial adviser. A company that hasn't been in touch with their client for weeks.

The company's Trustpilot rating is 2.6/10. Our estate-agent rang them more than ten times yesterday with no response and only managed to get though today (to someone who didn't know anything) after constantly re-dialling for twenty-five minutes. All e-mails to them from their client remain unanswered. The website is almost all stock photos. Googling the directors brings up poor reviews in their previous roles.

I can only guess at what the IFA's financial advice was Rolling Eyes

Who says he was an IFA? Could he not be just a broker?

The estate-agent! A "broker" is more likely as it doesn't seem that the 'I' in 'IFA' is applicable. Neutral

Apart the house we are buying, all parties live within a mile of each other, making a company in the Midlands a strange choice. It is a shame there have been mergers - I always fancied having my legal work done by Peter Careless in Littlehampton, if only to explore nominative determinism. 8)

Falling foul of Austrian officials at border, €120 fine, Censored !!!!

Knew we needed a vignette so stopped at motorway services but got stuck in lorry park road and ended up back on motorway with no way to loop round. No problem next town is 2km away. Pulled off to buy at petrol station. Just before the station the ‘plod’ are waiting and we’d already entered Austria (unknowingly, no signs or border point) so fined on the spot however much we tried to reason with them.

Just felt like a set-up to catch unwitting tourists given locality to the FIRST POSSIBLE PLACE you could stop to buy the vignette.

If ever the phrase “jumped up little hitlers” applied this was, literally, it 😂

We were going to stop to spend our tourist euro’s in the country but Censored that, Slovenia it was, non-stop....

Ah well, could have been worse..... Sad
