ok … finally decided I need to fix this. Looks like wheel arch liner isn't fitted properly.
and tips/hints/instructions on how I fix it ?
It's only the "front" edge affected … at top of the arch it reverts to being inside the arch flare..

Get new ones - its a shaped rubber strip with a metal stiffener inside - about £30 and takes minutes to fit - also good opportunity to clean the crud out
I cant find the part number (I bought mine a while ago) but euangibson recently posted replacing his

I was thinking it was a bigger part with the edging attached
So just pull it out, clear the out and put new one on ?

Yep - takes longer to clean than fit.
At first I thought it was a stuck on piece of mastic until I started messing about with it.
I didn't bother taking the plastic wheel arch line of - just pushed it upwards and used a hose to clean until water ran clear, waited till it dried and then fitted the new trim

I'll look in the morning if it's worth getting two and doing both sides whilst I'm at it.

Had the same issue on one side. The other side didn't have one fitted, so assumed it was something that had got picked up somewhere and found it's way up there. Pulled it out (wasn't fitted in anyway - just came away when a bit of pressure was put on it) and threw it away.
How essential are these for keeping everything behind the arch-liner in tip top shape?

Without the liner, plenty of s..t ends up back there. I had plenty of between the body and plastic wheel arches even if the vehicle spends most of its time on regular roads.
