Wheel Corrosion & Loss of Air

Had a new tyre fitted 2 months ago and found that it has been loosing about 10psi every month.

I've had the tyre checked again together with the valve & they are ok. They did report that there is a small loss of air because of corrosion on the inner rim and the wheel would have to be reworked to remove the corrosion.
Has anyone else experienced this and if so, any idea of the cost to re machine the inner rim (it'll probably need re painting, then, do I get all four done Rolling Eyes )

Not on disco/ffrr but did have to replace all 4 wheels on trailer due to corrosion and losing air.

So yes a real probability, would get all 4 returned at same time as others won't be far behind.

I am sure that we are all aware that alloy is porous and that it's the paint, powder-coat or other finish which provides the pressure seal.

Don't forget to get quotes for a full refurb, and mention that you want to resolve the tyre pressure leaks.

It could be that some kind soul local to you might lend you a set of wheels & tyres whilst the job is being done.

It’s a really common thing, the paint flakes and the air escapes due to the lack of seal...

A temporary fix is using a wire brush on the rim to remove the flaky paint. Most tyre dealers can also use a special paste which also helps the tyre to reseal....

The only long term result is to have the wheels refurbished...

Lepsons are a company that do refurbing and have been excellent with every set I have sent them... Very Happy

I’ve had exactly that done on my 4x winter wheels today ! All were going flat due to paint flaking and corrosion, my local tyre guys used the rubbery sealant. I’ll be getting the rims refurbished at the end of winter I think.

It also used to happen on steel wheels, paint would flake and rims would start to corrode, you then got air loss. We used to break the bead, wire brush the rim and applya layer of sealant which resoloved the issue.
Personaly if the rims are generally in good condition that is the way I would go even with alloys, cannot see the point in a lot of cost to remove tyres strip and powder coat the wheels if the rims are generally good.

You will probably find they are only pitted in a small area, take the culprit off and put the spare on while you rub it down and brush paint it, leave a day or two for the paint to harden, tyre depos usually charge around a tenner to remove and refit, forget about the others if they are not leaking they are good.
Polyurethane based paint is best wearing.
 It can when others can't,

I always had this problem on old alloys when I had my Mg meastro. It tends to be the inner rim that you can’t see, the fitters would wire brush it and apply a black sealant instead of the soapy stuff they use.
They used to check for leaks by putting it under water, they don’t do that now, they always assume it’s good.

Yes, it's the inner rim which is on the offending wheel. I've asked for a quote to refurbish all 4 as there is corrosion build up blistering the paint on all the wheels.
If the cost is acceptable, best get them all done as a job lot as I'll probably be able to get the price down a little.

I suppose the whole job will take a week to do so will be without the truck. Probably not easy borrowing 4 wheels to stick on it while they are done Neutral

Update: Just had one price (from a recommendation) to machine & spray all four to original colour. £408 all in inc vat. Job will take one day so not much to sacrifice.

Still waiting on another price so will see which to use Smile

Indeed there are. I've been looking through them. I'm rather attached to my originals for some funny reason Confused Trouble is, not that I doubt honest sellers, you don't know what you are getting. I know the history of mine where they have not been abused. No doubt I'll be ribbed for this Rolling Eyes

Second quote received. £312 all in but will be charged storage of £48 which includes wheel removal & refitting. Job will take around 2 days plus they are further away.

Decision time over Xmas. I'm sure the wife can go without that extra present this year Rolling with laughter

Corrosion being what it is on the West coast of Scotland the local solution is wire brush then use waxoyl instead of tyre soap...seems to work a treat and cost next to nothing.
