Thanks, will do same then.
What damage, if any, will I have done having previously connected the neg wire to the neg terminal all these years but especially to the D4 for the last few months?

No damage, but the car doesn't learn the charge, so your battery is fully charged, but the car are charging it as if it were not.
Perhaps this, in the long run, could compromise battery life.Discovery 5 tdv6 HSE Corris Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition

Poops. I have always connected the negative of the c tek to the negative on the battery. Never seemed to have done any harm. Will stop doing this now and attach to an Earth point under the bonnet.James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

I’m a bit confused by the auxiliary battery and how to charge, on the D4 if the s/s stops working I plug in the charger in to the tow electrics and we are good to go but with my other car I can’t seem to get the S/s to work. Can I remove the auxiliary battery to charge it and still drive the car as normal?24MY X-Dynamic HSE Defender 110.

Thanks, I swapped the neg cable onto a chassis ground as advised so all’s good for the future. My untrained electrician brain can’t understand how it would matter if the neg cable is connected to the neg terminal which itself is connected to the chassis, or direct to the chassis....??
Likewise how this would effect the car learning the battery’s charge state...??
(I’m not arguing as very unqualified, just can’t see how it would make any difference?!)

It's good practice to use an earth point anyway, but I'm pretty sure the D3 didn't have the Battery Monitoring System, so it's not as important D4 MY14 XXV - RLD/IID BT

Space Cadet - if you have a look at the -ve terminal of your battery you'll see a sensor attached to the cable coming from the battery. This is the sensor for the BMS. If you connect your charger to an earth point, any charge is picked up by the BMS, whereas if you connected directly to the battery, you'd bypass it.
As far as charging the secondary battery is concerned, you can connect directly to the battery, as you'll see that the negative cable goes straight to the body and doesn't have any sensor on it. Some have disconnected the secondary battery to disable the stop/start function, so in theory you could remove it and still drive the vehicle. Whether this is a good idea or not is another matter D4 MY14 XXV - RLD/IID BT

Anyone any experience of this charger ? Seems to do everything the CTEKs do plus some checks on the charging system too.

I bought the MXS 5.0 charger and put in on the battery this morning at 09.30 , just got to step 7 fully charged at 19.30 .
The comfort extension lead allowed me to leave the unit in the garage and monitor it occasionally .
We haven't had any battery issues to date but as my wife only does short journeys daily I thought it would be worthwhile to charge it fully .

Thanks for clearing that, I will check to if the wiring is the same for MB and give it a charge.24MY X-Dynamic HSE Defender 110.

I've got myself a CTEK charger now. Went for the 7 which seemed the best compromise on power/cost and still has the 5 yr warranty.
Has anyone worked out how to be able to shut the bonnet whilst charging? Looks as though it will trap the cable between the rubber seals and I don't trust it not to damage it.
