I've owned my D4 MY12 for just over 3 years and have covered 37k miles!! Just after the vehicle coming out of warranty I was driving and found clouds of white smoke coming from the exhausts for a brief period (approx 10 seconds)!!! This has happened 3 times in all now . I thought it was the DPF regenerating but I had never experienced this before. I phoned the dealer whom couldn't give any further info but said could be water vapour but the vehicle had been running for 15 mins or so!!?? Other than this the exhaust is clear even if booted!!!
Could it be the DPF or does anyone know or experienced similar problem?? The majority of my trips are 15 miles including a brief motorway bit!!!

Dark smoke = oil?
Check what is dripping out of the tailpipe...  Dave

Nothing is dripping from the exhausts and in fact wiped my finger on it and it was clean!!! It was a light fluffy smoke and vehicle doesn't burn oil or need top ups!!! The amount of smoke is really embarrassing when it occurs from a relatively new vehicle!!!!

My money based on relatively low mileage and brief trips that its water (condensation) build up in the various exhaust baffle sections, e.g. the water vapour explanation. Think of those cars you have followed driven by my grandma that dribble water out of the exhaust as they pull away, same thing.
In the absence of any other symptoms I'd go with this, may be worth having a quick look (when cold !) inside the cooler expansion bottle to check no oil or crud and also taking the oil filler cap off to check there is no emulsion on that. If all ok, take it for a blast up the motorway a bit more often, you know you'll love it

Short journeys can kill a dpf, I had a octavia vrs tdi with dpf and a sensor failed and if I had not caught it and drove more it would have cost me in excess of £2000 to replace, if it is dpf regeneration then you should do 50 miles plus to help the process or it should be possible for a plug in and force regeneration. The only other white smoke is turbo failure but usually noticed on throttle lift off first.

I had a similar issue on an Audi and it was injectors.
Try leaving the vehicle on idle for a long period and see if white smoke comes out.??

My D4 is also 2012. I have only done 10K miles and all trips are 20+ miles. I experience the same smoke as you describe (although I would call it very light grey). Usually occurs after I have driven about 10 miles and accelerate a little bit faster than usual. Dealers say that it is a "vehicle characteristic" - The drivers behind me when I pull out might say something different! moles

I've also seen a toyota billowing white smoke and this was an injector too

Quite a few posts on smoking D4's
Mine will occasionaly smoke on start up (if the tempearture is around 10 degrees - any warmer / colder - nothing) I know ist fuel as I can smell the diesel - might be a dodgy injector - but it's been that way for about 2 years - recycling the ignition a couple of times helps
If I boot it on the motorway, I will occasionally get a puff of grey smoke - especially if it first time after my usual pottering about - boot it again - nothing - again, been like this for about 4 years
Never appears to burn oil
Took it to the dealers when under warranty - could find any problems
So, same as moles, hopefully it's just what they do
Currently on 82K, MY10 that I've had since new

I think that is the same as mine. It definitely isn't vapour/steam as I know the difference between that and smoke. I reckon it must be the injector.... Bloody typical after coming out of warranty for 6 days!!! Took it for a real blast around the M25 via Heathrow for a clear out so hopefully will see if it occurs again soon!!! You are right about drivers behind as its so embarrassing.... A decent car puffing like a tractor!!!

I had exactly the same issue.
I own a D4 model 2012 TDV6 3.0 SE.
In 2015 just a few days after the expiration of the warranty and with only 30,000 km done, the vehicle emitted white and very dense smoke.
So far these events happened 3 times, usually just after refuelling or when the tank is almost empty and always in the aftermaths of constant accelerations (motorways).
Yesterday I could observe from close and smell/breath the smoke. It seems to me as a very fine and dense dust.
I moved to Panama from Geneva (Switz.) 15 months ago and I thought the issue was related to the huge humidity we have here but not sure. Most probably it is related to the quality of diesel here in panama.

Quite common on Audis and even if you cant see the unburnt diesel as white smoke you can normally smell it.
