Wierd one

Last week, I was out with the family in the car. Traditional jolly for Xmas tree shopping. We were listening to the DAB and to my daughters iPhone for most of the day. The girls were sat in the car listening to music, while we were saying goodbye's to family. There was suddenly a loud noise form the car, and my 7yo shot out crying.

Opened the door, and there was a loud static sound (Like the old B&W tv's when you had to go between stations by tuning it). Turned power off, until we were ready to go.

For the next hour of our journey home, we had nothing but intermittent static. Whether the radio was On, Off, DAB, FM, AM, iPhone, CD, it was just static for about 2 mins, then it would stop for about 2 mins. All the way home. Tried turning the car off then back on. No change. What was weird, was the volume knob obviously turned the noise up and down, but never turned it off. The knob still worked, when the power to the radio was supposedly off.

After we got home, I went back to the car, about 2hrs later, and it was still the same.

Next morning, all was fine. Nothing since.

Any ideas? Has this happened to anyone else?

Got a couple of 2-3hr drives coming up over Xmas, and won't be able to cope with the static for the entire journey.

On the D3 with 6 speed auto there was a resistor/supressor on the side of the gearbox related to radio and when this blew it could take out fuse 30 and disable the car. I unplugged this small black box on the side of the gearbox and replaced fuse 30 and drove around until the new one arrived. There appeared to be no downside? Not sure if the D4 six speed is the same but maybe linked Thumbs Up

Intermittent Static

I have had the same problem two or three times and nothing will silence or reduce the sudden loud static blasting from the speakers. Even stopping and switching the engine off did not stop the noise until the car was locked and unlocked using the Smart Key. From then on all back to normal again.

Glad to hear that. Hopefully it will just be one of those fortune cookie type of anomalies that does not recur. Still love the Disco particularly the large full height boot space.
