Winch suggestions

New Year resolution is to do some green lanes this year. Due to various reasons, not always possible to arrange a multi car day, so could be going solo. I will not be venturing on anything too tricky, but being a sensible bloke, some kind of winch would be good.

But, I am not keen to have a fitted electric winch on the front of the car, so looking for suggestions of alternatives, so either a manual/hand winch or something like this (found it courtesy of another unrelated thread on here)

Hand winch I have found:

Welcome any other suggestions or comments on these please

I have a winch fitted, and I only use it as a last resort. First is the spade and waffle boards. With the winch comes added risk which I will only entertain if necessary. Plus the winch is usually only used to rescue other stuck cars.

Tirfor winch, no car mods needed, plus if you think about it you have got stuck going forwards so logical step is to pull yourself out backwards.

What lynalldiscovery says, yes it's a slow process but you can recover yourself in any direction

Tirfors are excellent and also have a safety device if they are overloaded to stop damage to the cable or mechanism, the operating handle has a shear pin that goes when overloaded.

Following the replies above, I have been doing some research.

Seems to be a few different brands of hand winches, I say brands on purpose, because looking at the pictures of them, many look identical, as do the specifications. So I suspect they may be the same with just different badges. Anyway, to my question:

In terms of specifications, they do seem to step up a fair bit (as does the price) so trying to determine what I should go for. For example, one I have seen has a lifting weight of 1600kg but a pulling weight of 2400kg. Considering that I will not be going anywhere too extreme etc, is a pulling weight 2400kg sufficient? Or would I be foolish and pay over half as much again to step up to 3200 lift and 4800 kg pulling?
Or keep with the cheaper model, and spend the extra on waffle boards?

Advice, as always, gratefully received.

We carry the smaller 1600 lift 2400 pull on the appliance. We have had to use it to move the appliance sideways on a slippery loose gravel drive (long storey). The appliance was fully loaded and also had a full tank o water, it was on loose gravel and yet the Tirfor moved it side says about 1 foot with no issues.
Have also used it to move cars up steep banks etc
So I would think it would be OK for normal off road but if it is extreme with very deep mud may not be man enough

You can always use a pulley block if the single line pull isn't enough... but with a hand winch it would take a looonnng time and a lot of swinging on that handle Laughing
