Winter MPG (sigh)

Anyone else noticing their fuel consumption going down?
I've gone from a balmy 29-30 down to about 25-26 over the past few file. Winter fuel additives or something else....

Always found that fuel consumption goes down from the middle of November through till April and this is all diesels, gut feeling that the anti waxing additive doesn’t help.

If I could get 28 to 30 regularly I'd be happy, usually around 25

Funny you mention this. Mine has dropped off. Lost about 3mpg on the gauge over the normal 250mile day

Some people apparently pull the can wires form the fbh plug to stop it running

I notice mine seems to run pretty much all the time the engine is running once the external temp drops.

The FBH hardly uses any fuel, so not sure why anyone would disconnect it??

I find if I preheat the car with timed climate, the MPG is generally better. It’s a cold engine that Kills the mpg

Flip side of the coin, I also found mpg improved by the same 10% when it got hot, like in the 30s hot. My theory is that as the tyres warm up they get softer so less rolling resistance.

Iirc the fbh uses between 1/4 and 1/2 litre per hour at full chat.

If you did a lot of motorway driving at 55mph you could get 25 I reckon. My commute to work is 3 miles of stop start through town.

You don't buy a V8 if your bothered about MPG!

I didn't bother with a diesel because I quite like the fact I'm not driving around a crank failure lottery engine

Over the past 20 years or so I've ran several diesel cars and vans. A good slug of redex add mix in each tank will give me up to 10% more power or MPG (depending on how I want to use it) keeps injectors in top condition and runs quieter. I've also noticed a drop in MPG since the cold weather started I'm down to 29 from 32-33 my driving is 50-50 distance and short runs.
