Winter tyres.
This has probably been asked several times before, but I couldn't get exactly what I wanted using the search facility, so....
I'm currently running on the standard 18" SE wheels and tyres (Goodyear’s) that came fitted when I bought my D3, but 27k miles on and I'm due a new set of rubber. Instead of just popping down to Kwik-Fit, I've plumped for a nice set of FFRR 19 inchers with Pirelli Scorpion Zeros which leaves me with a nice spare set of 18" rims which I want to turn into a set of winter wheels/tyres to swap on to when the bad weather comes, like is done in Germany and some other European countries.
Question is, what rubber do I go for on these winter wheels? My winter driving is predominantly on country B and C roads, some A roads and a little motorway driving and the odd time dragging a horse box over a muddy field. There was a lot of snow and ice up here last winter too so I’m looking for something that’s capable in those conditions (better then the scorpions anyway) but I don’t think I need an out and out off-road tyre. I’d like to keep it to around £150 per corner too if I can.

can't beat Verdestien Wintrac for winter in my opinion, or for summer as well for that matterTintenter

Thanks gents....I'm guessing you're talking the Vredestein Wintrac 4 Xtreme XL 255/60R18 (112H), they certainly look the business - best price I've seen is £151 each... Time to talk to AJs4x4 I think.
Failing that, the Continental Winter Contact is a good tyre in 18" fitment. I have a set I used this last winter, including time in the alps, and they were great.
Got me across the South Downs at 4am in 8" of snow too I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

We use the continential winter contact 3 on the wife's eurocarrier, good tyres.
On the 110 I used Cooper Discoverer M+S, this was a good tyre, however, like all studless tyres if there is a salt used on the roads then pressure wash the tyres regulary, as the salt plugs up the lammels, and you loose the best traction properties.
I found this out the hard way, but hey that's why the 110 had a winch.

Nothing exciting. Just drove from Dorchester to my client's office in Crawley, avoiding motorways like the plague. Headed up along and across the South Downs A and B roads and got to the office before 07:00
Meanwhile, members of the client's staff couldn't drag their backsides in from 3 miles away.
